So much for toning down the violent political rhetoric in Washington.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) used gun imagery Sunday while discussing public workers' collective bargaining rights.

"In some of these states you've got collective bargaining laws that are so weighted in favor of the public employees that there’s almost no bargaining," he told CBN's David Brody.

"We've given them a machine gun and put it right at the heads of the local officials and they really have their hands tied."

Republican governors in some states have moved to force unions to pay more for benefits, and to strip them of collective bargaining rights. Thousands have recently protested union-busting bills in Wisconsin, Ohio and Indiana.

"I think what you're seeing in these states is they're trying to bring some balance to these negotiations that when you look at the pay of public employees today and you look at their retirement benefits they are way out of line with many other working Americans," Boehner added.

In the wake of a mass shooting in Arizona that left six dead and Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) in the hospital, Boehner did temporarily moderate his word choice.

After the shooting, the House Speaker chose to refer to President Obama's signature health care law as "job destroying" instead of "job killing."

The Ohio Republican may be testing the waters for more violent words in the future.

Earlier this year, Rep. Mike Lee (R-UT) said that toning down the rhetoric means "the shooter wins."

"What happened to Boehner here is a symptom a lot of politicians are noticing," Talking Points Memo's Brian Beutler noted. "As the weeks tick away since the Arizona shooting, they're slipping back into modes of rhetoric they'd grown comfortable with over the last years. Of course, they'll continually readjust and correct themselves for the next long interim, but they're on the slow slide back to the status quo ante."

Technically, as long as the machine gun was manufactured before 1986, they already do. It's just not widely known because most of the ones available on the open market are either deactivated or ludicrously expensive, and they're primarily only purchased by collectors these days. But yeah, as long as the weapon was built before that cutoff date, it got grandfathered in, and is perfectly legal to purchase or own with the proper paperwork.

As for the rhetoric, I fail to see how collective bargaining directly threatens the lives of public officials, which is the only sensible way it could be likened to a 'machine gun'.

For Republicans to hold 'machine guns' to the heads of the sick, the disabled, the mentally ill, the poor, or those who are unemployed while at the same time they do the bidding of the rich and greedy. And they think everyone should just shut up and let them.

No Mr. Speaker, if they really had a weapon of any sort someone would have already pulled the trigger.

As if it is all local officials? Um, since we are talking about public employee unions wouldn't that mean most "local officials" side with the unions?

Oh, right, facts have no bearing on the GOP.

Democrats only hold figurative machine guns. Republicans actually shoot Democrats with literal machine guns.

if we the progressive/liberals are ever going to win this
fucking attack on the poor and middle class from the
gop/teabaggers, then we and the democrats we have
elected MUST turn this attack by them on the unions
into the real civil-class war that it really is--and that
is against the wealthy elite bastards that the gop/teabaggers
are sucking-a$$ for and that is corporations, the kocks
and all the foreign interests that are destroying this country.

the unions are NOT a problem or a cause for the out-of-control
debt we have in our country...it's the bastard rich. until the
democrats in congress become as aggressive as the lying
gop/teabaggers and push the truth LOUD AND INCESSANTLY,
we will have exactly what we had at the turn of the last
century--an oligarchy in full control and the rest of us
starving. what do you want?

...I think the dumbocrats are as much responsible as the republican'ts and I start by blaming nancy "impeachment off the table" pelosi and barack "I will end the bush tax cuts on the rich" obama.

Until someone goes after the wall st. dix who created the toxic assets that the state's bought with pension money, do they really think things will get better? What happens when they bust these public employee unions? They hire unqualified people and then scream about the amount of waste being generated in the DMV or the lack of a good public education? You know, you just know that's coming if the right gets its way and eliminates collective bargaining. Look at the concessions the Wisconsin public employees have made...7% cut in income to pay more for their pension and health care. What's next? Blood?

Wow, one of the best posts I've read in a long time.

I totally agree with you. People need to realize that both parties are completely corrupt and will not lift a finger against their Overlords in Big Business. Eliminating union powers is just to clear a road block from them completely changing the rules.

Paul's picture

Too true. With only the smallest handful of exceptions, I see no substantive difference between the GOPers and Democrats. One is openly composed of malignant personalities who don't care that they are seen for what they are, and the other is self-serving malignant personalities who must still make pretense that they give a shit about people or the nation. Both sides are rapidly moving to the point where they no longer feel the need to waste energy hiding behind pretenses of any sort. They are both working to establish a totalitarian neo-fuedal society under the control of overlords who back up their power and authority with the most technically advanced police apparatus in history. They are successfulkly working an incremental conversion of the People from free and strong citizens into cowering and obedient subjects;destroying workers rights and remedies is just part of that process.

They believe themselves to be untouchable and unstoppable at this point. they are continually destroying options for peaceful outcomes.

...and not enough people interested in a Progressive agenda. I hate labeling my fellow Americans with derogatory appellations but whether by lack of education, brainwashing or apathy, not enough people care. Maybe its the fact that our paychecks have been flat for so long and people are afraid of upsetting the apple cart for fear of seeing their income plummet and their assets reduced in value. They buy gold, guns rather than save and wait for the revolution to come down the street; but it will never come. However, slowly and surely, their incomes will drop and assets will be devalued as wealthy people continue to take, take, take and not allow their wealth to trickle back into the economy so sorely in need of a stimulus. We don't make anything any more and that right there needs to be addressed. We need to bring in scientists and engineers (not Jeffrey Immelt) to formulate ideas that will allow America to grow and prosper while creating jobs that require an education so that the future is secured by new ideas grown from the better education enjoyed by the youth in America. I've said it before, already we're facing flooding in the middle of the country from the excessive snow this past winter. How is Flood Insurance doing anything to create jobs? Granted, some people are going to need it but doesn't a flood-prone area need remediation instead? Move the water in massive quantities through pipes made of recycled plastic and rubber tires. Move it to drought-prone areas. That's investment in infrastructure. Construct houses that are tornado proof, dome shaped, largely underground. That's investment in infrastructure. Job creating, allows families to not have to see their possessions destroyed in natural disasters, saves money over the long term, how is this a bad thing? I'm not an engineer only a guy with a BS in Biology who is interesting at parties; what would someone really intelligent have to say?

concerned with the rhetorical imagery than I am the ideology behind it. By focusing on the terms used as opposed to the ideas expressed we allow the "both sides do it" wail to be pressed every time someone on the other side "targets" a problem.

We should start a chorus of "Why are the republicans scared to sit at the table?" and "What are they really scared of?"

Well, now just think about it.

Collective Bargaining is very similar to a two party government. You sit down with the other side, they put their offer on the table, then you put your offer on the table, and like rational human beings, you sit down, give and take, and eventually compromise on a position.

Oh, wait. The way the Republicans have been stalling, blocking, and otherwise getting their way in the face of non-resistant opposition for the last 20 years, why would we NOT expect them to oppose Collective Bargaining?

Their "bargaining" involves "My way or the highway", scorched earth, take no prisoners and fuck you, I got mine.

If Boner and his ilk are such ardent advocates of slashing pay, benefits and pesnions, it is only right and just the all cuts and sacrifices begin with them. Let's start by cutting Boner's healthcare package, eliminating his pension and cutting his pay to minimum wage (this is supposed to be a job of public service, afterall, not public careerism)....then we can cut the minimum wage. After all, Boner's got a machine gun to the heads of all us taxpayers who he expects to support his sorry, parasitical ass. No?
