Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann revealed on Thursday that the AR-15 assault rifle was her favorite gun.

During a WHO-AM radio interview, Bachmann told host Jan Mickelson that she had planned to go pheasant hunting with Rep. Steve King (R-IA) on Friday.

"I'm a pretty good shot," the candidate admitted. "I learned how to hunt here in Iowa from my dad. I went through gun safety when I was 12."

"My favorite gun is an AR-15 because you can be so accurate with it," she explained. "And I scored the best in my class of any of the men too."

"The AR-15, that's a combat weapon?" Mickelson asked.

"I love it," Bachmann declared. "It's a great gun."

"It can be made automatic, but it's a semi-automatic .222," Mickelson said.

"I like being accurate and that is a great gun," Bachmann insisted.

"Accurate and apparently lots of firepower and many, many shots," Mickelson noted. "How big is your magazine?"

"You really want to know?" Bachmann asked with a nervous laugh, adding that all of her equipment was legal.

Pheasant hunting with an AR-15? Somebody take that bitch's guns away, right now! Oh, and by the way, Michelle, I wouldn't openly brag about how you can convert a semi-auto assault rifle like the AR-15 to full auto if I were you. You might get a visit from the ATF (not likely, I know, but it is disturbing to hear an elected representative openly brag about breaking the law).

WTF does a local police deptartment need with an M240 SAW, or a Mk.19 full auto 40mm grenade launcher? Why do cops have the need for full military weapons used to kill armies?

Sounds like overkill you'd think, but LA had a guy who robbed a bank in broad daylight, He was wearing body armor, the weapons the Cops had back then wouldn't touch that(9mm's, 45 colts and shotguns), He walked around and shot cops and civvies with impunity, He even took a potshot at a helicopter, He missed, Like He was an evil Superman dressed in Black, Some cops had to go to a gun store to get some real guns, just so they could rescue wounded and dying officers and civilians, He had that much of an advantage, but He had no sense as He didn't get lost when He could of, He hung around too long and the cops eventually armed themselves with an AR15 type weapon and 223 ammunition and finally stopped this killing machine. I'm sure the more serious weapons are just in case someone makes or smuggles in an RPG, gangs would love that, One Gang Member already put a bounty out on Cops once, no one took Him up on It though. And some gangs can be very violent, so the Cops just want to protect themselves and bystanders around them(I know I would of at one time If I could, My Grandpa was a Culver City Police Chief around 1923, The family has His Gold Badge too, I gave It to them as I thought they could take care of It and keep It safe better than I could), Cops have the training and yes experience to one extent or another, some though should retire and get their ptsd worked on before It kills them.

VBobier's picture

I'd not do that either, most wouldn't know how to fire a weapon in full auto mode, they just press the trigger until the mag empties, I was taught differently, plus I could take It apart, clean and oil It some where needed and reassemble It too and yes It would fire if no parts were left out when done properly, Today I wouldn't own a firearm as It would have to kept oiled as the artificial humidity here would rust the barrel, more humidity in a house in the desert, the cooler It is inside. Besides guns don't really interest Me anymore.

Bill Lumbergh's picture

...that you're technically correct, but my question would be: does the fact that the AR-15 is semi-automatic change the fact that it was designed to kill and severely injure people with maximum efficiency? I assume that the term "assualt weapon" was latched onto by those seeking a way to identify non-sporting, military-style weapons that were (and are) being used to kill innocent people.
Or maybe we should allow some slack in the usage of the term "assault weapon" since the AR-15 can be modified to fire full auto. Or would we then have to call it a light machine gun?
And that's how easily the debate gets framed with NRA talking points. Instead of debating whether a weapon should be regulated for public safety, we get distracted with bulllshit about its' technical features.

Captain Kangaroo's picture

They love using the term "assualt weapon" because it sounds so much more sinister. Just like they like to use the term "semi automatic handgun". Sounds scarier than handgun even though 99% (or close to it) of all hand guns are semi automatic.

Bill Lumbergh's picture

If "they" are trying to make military-style rifles sound more sinister by calling them "assault rifles", (correctly or not), then perhaps I don't have too much of a problem with that, since I confess to feeling uneasy around those who choose to own an AK or an AR or one of the knockoffs rather than a simple 30-06 or some other sporting rifle. Too many of the people I know who own these military-style rifles also happen to be reactionary-minded wingnuts; in fact, I can't think of one who is what I would describe as moderate or liberal.
I guess it's not the tool that scares me as much as the tool holding it.

watchdog's picture
.

Consiring what the AR-15 is modeled after, we should probably compare it wth an actual M-16 A 2 to see what the main differences are.

When angry, count four, when very angry, swear.
-Mark Twain-

Bill Lumbergh's picture

I believe that the AR actually predates the M-16, if purely in an evolutionary sense, but I could be wrong, as it's not exactly my kind of trivia.

Timjoebillybob's picture

the ar-15 does predate the ar-16. It was originally designed as a select fire weapon for the military. Colt bought the patent, and marketed the m-16 select fire to the military, and the ar-15 as a semi auto to the public.

watchdog's picture
.

I still think we could compare their capabilities.

When angry, count four, when very angry, swear.
-Mark Twain-

Timjoebillybob's picture

(usually) the 5.56 nato round. The m-16 is usually select fire, although they do have semi-auto versions for training and some are issued semi-auto only. They both look similar. The ar-15 is almost always semi-auto, although there are a few full autos out their. The m-16 is pretty easy from what I under stand to convert to select/full auto, if they are semi auto. The ar-15 is not, fed regs. prohibit several things on an ar-15, that would make it convertible. And having those things in or part of an ar-15 can and/or will make it a federal felony even if it is semi-auto only.

The ar-15 is no different functionally, or capability different then lets say a ruger mini-14. Which is a standard .223 chambered rifle that is in common use among sportsman, farmers, ranchers, target shooters etc.

Here is a pretty good video explaining how a standard sporting rifle is turned into an "assault rifle" with just cosmetic differences. The San Jose CA officer uses a ruger mini-14 for the demonstration.

If we called them "nature's truncheons"

Timjoebillybob's picture

Who used the term assault weapon? No one that I heard. Only one that used it was the blogger on this site. What does that say?

Timjoebillybob's picture

is trying to make them sound more sinister? The blogger on crooksandliars? Assault rifles/weapons was only mentioned by the blogger. you would rather know someone that owns a 30-06 sniper rifle that someone who owns an ak or ar for hunting? Yes I know people that own ARs and AKs for hunting. In my state one of the few deer is designed for the AR platform, it's the 458 socom.

Augdir's picture

The color, the evil "looking" features arent the probblem with these and the AK variants. High capacity magazines and bump fire capability are the problem. Technically not a machinegun, but capable of killing a roomfull of people with minimum effort. Look up bump fire on youtube.

Neocon513's picture

... and not the .222 round the conservative talk radio blow-hard stated... the military uses .223 NATO ball rounds...

BTW, Michelle Bachmann: You & your AR-15 are not scoring the best in your class against any of the men. Some of those men are right out of the armed forces, where they were actually trained to fire a AR-15.

Please restrict your bald-faced lies to the political arena.
