Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann said Thursday that Americans are alarmed that President Barack Obama may cut defense spending at a time when the Soviet Union is becoming a power in the world.

"When you are traveling -- I know you are in South Carolina now, you're obviously in Iowa, you're up in New Hampshire -- are you hearing different things in these states?" Christian radio host Jay Sekulow asked the candidate.

"I would say it's a unified message," Bachmann explained. "It really is about jobs and the economy. That doesn't mean people haven't [sic] forgotten about protecting life and marriage and the sanctity of the family. People are very concerned about that as well."

"But what people recognize is that there's a fear that the United States is in an unstoppable decline. They see the rise of China, the rise of India, the rise of the Soviet Union and our loss militarily going forward. And especially with this very bad debt ceiling bill, what we have done is given a favor to President Obama and the first thing he'll whack is five hundred billion out of the military defense at a time when we're fighting three wars. People recognize that."

The Soviet Union collapsed and was formally dissolved on December 26, 1991 after Gorbachev resigned as President and the Supreme Soviet ended.

The Russians fought Nazi Germany to defeat. "Red Dawn" was typical American PROPAGANDA. As much as the Rethugs and Conservitards like to criticize Hollywood, they are pretty effective at doing the government's propaganda work.

Witness USA Network's new show, "Covert Affairs", a show I like to watch. The CIA are all heroes and over 100 of them have died "serving" the corporate elite, I mean their country. And the environmental terrorists have already showed up on a show, armed with automatic weapons and kiling many in the cause. Different group, but they are all affiliated, right, of environmental killers showed up on "Burn Notice", another USA Network show I enjoy watching. And I can watch them, because I boycott ALL of their advertisers, without exception (easy for a poor Vegan with an old PU truck).

The show's are amusing, but the not so hidden message is insidious. Sort of like reading the NY Times--read between the lines and it is a good rag. Otherwise, spokesmouth of the criminally corrupt elite.

Ape-Man's picture

YEP. Red Dawn = MIC Propaganda.

'Covert Affairs' sounds like propaganda too. I read the description and decided to pass, even though i like intrigue. 'Rubicon' on AMC last year was great! - It was all about corruption in the national security racket. I guess that's why they cancelled it after one season...

had the job of interogating German prisons. he was asked by one prisoner where he came from, and the German,in perfect English, replied, " oh, that's were the Whatevernamed River is" and the US soldier's mind was blown, because it was more of a creek than river, and relatively obscure.

When he asked the German how he knew so much about US geograpy, the German told him that they were trained for the invasion of the USA, well trained, to know the country and details.

The Cubans likely aren't going to be needing any road signs when they "invade".

But if they invade, it will probably be with doctors, nurses and medical supplies, because, as a rapidly deteriorating second-to-third world country, we really need public health/medical help most.

Forgive her America, for she knows not of what she speaks.

Bachmann and Palin share fundamental character flaws -- both have a propensity toward making snide, petty comments about those with whom they disagree, neither does her homework before making public comments regarding important social and historical events, neither is capable of extemporaneously elaborating on their mundane, superficial talking points, and neither is mature enough to accept responsibility for her own mistakes, failures, and shortcomings.

linus bern's picture

Setting aside the fact that she seems unaware of the fact that there hasn't been a Soviet Union for 20 years, Bachman sees a threat to US economic dominance by the increasing economic might of China, India, and Russia, and concludes that the US need to invest even more in its military. Does she plan on invading these countries to destroy their economies? Perhaps part of the problem is that the lion's share of the treasury is going to pointless military adventures, leaving nothing to invest domestically in things like infrastructure, education, and health care that might actual put the US on a stronger economic footing.

it almost hurt. The Russia has been quietly working on its arsenal since 1995. We are totally convinced that we are the ones who call the shots in the world. We are in for a surprise just like Bush was surprised in Georgia. First, he instigated the Georgians to attack the Russians, when they reacted and kicked Georgia's ass, Bush played dumb. The Russians are in no place in the world like America (735 military installations around the world). They make no political comments about anything. They don't get involved in anything. They stay to themselves. I met lots of them in Phuket, Thailand. Pleasant friendly. But when I said I was American, I saw this little flint in their eyes. funny, I never heard about a formal declaration of war, just some sort of congressional "authorization" to use force. Is that now the same thing?

yes, I'm splitting hairs a little bit, but I think it's an important distinction. Congress seems to have shirked their responsibility to declare wars half a dozen times or more since WWII, but now that the situation for police actions has become the defacto normal, they're upset about a far more limited involvement in Libya? Pot, meet Kettle.

Not that I'm happy about Libya - far from it. But I think congresspeople bitching about it is a little weak.
