Steve Benen has more:

Last night's speech wasn't nearly as adorable. Shadegg spoke from the House floor to rail against a criminal trial for alleged 9/11 conspirators in New York City. In particular, the far-right Arizonan was incensed that NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I) believes, "It is fitting that 9/11 suspects face justice near the World Trade Center site where so many New Yorkers were murdered."

As Matt Finkelstein reported, Shadegg doesn't see it quite the same way. "I saw the Mayor of New York said today, 'We're tough. We can do it,'" the Republican congressman said. "Well, Mayor, how are you going to feel when it's your daughter that's kidnapped at school by a terrorist? How are you going to feel when it's some clerk -- some innocent clerk of the court -- whose daughter or son is kidnapped? Or the jailer's little brother or little sister?"

As a matter of decency, Shadegg's little tantrum was vile and unnecessary. If Shadegg has a policy argument to make, fine. But openly speculating on the House floor about imaginary kidnappings of the mayor's daughter is loathsome, even by the standards of congressional Republicans.

Because they are cowards! And insane!
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness that is killing America!

It truly sucks when someone says what you NEED to hear and not what you WANT to hear. Bringing these savages here to prosecute under our system is so totally wrong it's hard to find the words to describe. These are people who play by no rules, what part of that do you not understand?

nickjacket's picture

Indians into Arizona had been so dangerous (snick). They played by no rules because we kept calling them savages and they wouldn't cooperate.

Once they had been beaten into submission with religion, alcohol, drugs and white mans money they cooperated.

tiktokklok's picture

...your post shows just how uninformed, cowardly and UN-American you are. Why don't you move to North Korea where they dispense the kind of "justice" you seem to admire?

Cowardly, ignorant, UN-American Repukes don't belong in the United states.

surfjac's picture

..terrorists, don't play by the rules; so what? We're supposed to be the ones on the moral high ground. w did a fine job of running that train right off the track. Here's an opportunity to show the world we DO believe in the rule of law.

But then again, maybe you're talking about the cowards in the gop who don't play by the rules. Its always OK if a republican't does it!

The thing that the cowards are afraid of is the previous administration being dragged into this because of the torture committed illegally in our name.

I feel sorry for you, you obviously have no faith in America or its traditions. You are allowing yourself to be motivated by fear and ignorance and as such that makes you a ripe target of the lies and fearmongering of the republican'ts.
In your warped world view, terrorists will be inspired by a bunch of men being put on trial for their crimes, but the same terrorists wont be inspired by our invading another country on the flimsiest of reasons and killing thousands of people in the process. You have been sadly misled. If you have no faith in the American way, just say so. It would be more honest of you, rather than relying on easily disprovable talking points based off of bad lawyer movies and tv shows.

Because they are cowards! And insane!

I don't know why we're not using the right word for these Republicans: pussies.

They are timid, weak frightened scaredy cats who think terrorists have magical powers to move through walls.

Any body who believes NYC isn't tough enough for these trials, doesn't know NYC! We all know what the terrorists believe in; they're not going to say anything we haven't already heard.
Put me on the jury! Shoot, let me walk them to the court!
To the right-wing I say: I AM NOT AFRAID OF THESE BASTARDS!

Just think about how New Yorkers defeated the terrorists on 9/12/01 when they refused to be terrorized. I lived there for 10 years in the 60's/70's and still have ties. I consider it 'my city' still. Never was I ever so proud of the City to see all New Yorkers pull together then. Everybody became polite to and caring of their neighbors, something people from outside found startling, but just underlined the basic decency of the New York people. Sure there are some who don't believe it appropriate to hold the trial there, but they are in the minority. Nobody is afraid there, except perhaps the minority of right wing loonies.

Why, Sir, are you doing the terrorists' work for them, preying on the fears of innocent men and women so that they do not confront terrorism and terrorists as the criminals/thugs they are, but instead elevate them to influential figures that we must fear and cater to?

You disgust me.

If I were a NYC cop I would be pissed as hell that these wimps don't think NYC cops can handle something like this. The police force should speak out against this dumb shit fear mongering and do it now.

a comment such as this. Gohmert, Foxx, King, Barton, Kingston, Shadegg, Bachmann, Schmidt, and others too numerous to mention. those are some congressional GOPers whove said things thatre outrageous. sheesh they really are shrill and meanwhile offering no solutions to any problems the US faces. but plenty of vitriol and unproductive rants.

in the American populace was one of the driving tenets of the PNAC neo-con strategy. Without something to galvanize that 'fear' response (like, say a New Pearl Harbor - 9/11) they knew that the American people would not support their imperial adventures to invade sovereign nations to secure oil and gas resources. Thus, they either 'allowed' the attack to happen...or, 'made it' happen, depending on your point of view.

And, make no mistake, Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Kristol, et al were sitting in their offices grinning and wringing their grubby little hands as they watched the reactions of Americans on 9/11 and the days immediately following. And, they still are.

They and their compatriots (these fools spewing BS in Congress) are the real Terrorists. I just wonder how much longer it will take for most Americans to understand this.

I have never seen so many morons using such dumbbed down arguments like these people.

Candideinnc's picture

I recently went to see relatives and was caught in a room where people were watching Faux News. (I have it blocked on my channnel at home, so never have to see it.) I was amazed at how EVERYTHING was designed to scare the audience. The terrorists are out to get us in the Middle East AND in Topeka; there are spies everywhere; Obama will destroy Medicare, Social Security, health care, and cause our great-great grandchildren to be in hock to the Chinese forever; Christianity is under attack; the Founding Fathers are experiencing the agonies of hell fire because Nancy Pelosi and the Libruls hate America and want to burn flags and turn us into a Nazi state.

No wonder all the Rethugs are paranoid, fearful, whimpering cowards! There is SO much for them to be afraid of. They will never be capable of doing anything more than wet their diapers after being frightened into believing there are boogeymen under every bed in this great country. We need to calm these people down and let them know that we will take care of all their boo-boos. The world is not a totally safe place, and care and planning are necessary to protect our interests, but we don't need to be cringing, anxiety ridden infants about things. More needs to be said about how frightened of their shadows the Rethug base has become, and how fear drives their party.

I find it interesting that given all the possible scenarios to make up to back up his clearly retarded opinion, he chooses terrorists kidnapping the mayor's daughter.
