President-Elect Obama Vows To Help Veterans

November 10, 2008 CNN

Be sure to also check out Bob Geiger's "A Vet's Message To The GOP on Veterans Day -- Shove It":

... Veterans benefits are earned -- and they matter.

Which is why I get so disgusted whenever I see all the faux military-loving Republicans turning up on Veterans Day with their flowery pronouncements of how much we Vets mean to them when they prove at every turn that they really don’t give a damn about the troops, Veterans or military families.

Of course, Exhibit A is Iraq and the Republican party's steadfast refusal to ever allow our troops to come permanently home to their families and their continued desire to keep them bogged down in a war for nothing. But I mention the G.I. Bill specifically because of the following samples of Republican hypocrisy we see every Veterans Day:

“On Veterans Day – and every day – we thank the men and women who have fought to keep us safe and free.” - Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN)

"We must remember the great debt that we owe veterans and members of the armed services who fight to maintain our freedom around the world. Throughout history, our soldiers have risked their lives to defend our freedom, and we must not forget their sacrifices." - Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ)

“Veterans Day is our opportunity to honor America’s veterans who have courageously served our country. These brave men and women have fought to keep our nation free and secure, and we thank them and their families for their service and sacrifice on our behalf.” - Senator Bob Corker (R-TN)

"So this day, perhaps more than any other day, is a time to honor them. We owe them our respect and profound gratitude." - Orrin Hatch (R-UT)

What's the common denominator in this crew? They all were among 22 Republicans who voted against the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill, authored by Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) -- a highly-decorated Vietnam Veteran -- and passed with 75 votes on May 22nd of this year.

Be sure to read it all. It's chockful of damning information.

Help them!!

Bring them the fuck home. All of them.

Get this country secure, get New Orleans cleaned up and then send them out

digging wells in Africa and Asia!!

Winning the hearts and minds of the world! Developing the menas to

clothe, feed and house a new planet.

Let me quote the wretched Book..."beat their swords into plowshares" and stuff!

It's time to bring them all home now. Let the healing begin.

Not only did McCain not return to the Senate to cast a vote, he voiced opposition to the bill, stating that solders would leave the service to take advantage of the new benefits, thus creating manpower shortages!

I felt like throwing a brick at my TV when McCain's mistress, Cindy, said "a cold chill went down my spine" when Obama voted against funding the troops. It was a stone cold lie coming from the slut whose husband has continuously voted against our vets' best interests.

Don't take it so hard, that was just the story she made up for her doctor so he would write her a script for Oxycontin and Vicodin.

We find their words empty and their thanks hollow. No one cares that we live at or below poverty levels. We are eligible for food stamps and free health care in certain states. Our children get reduced lunches because what my husband makes after 17 years in the Air Force isn't enough. Seventeen years. Seventeen years of deployments, missing birthdays, anniversaries, milestones, and he gets a "thanks", they can keep it. Yes, he signed up for this gig and is serving his country of his own free will, we should accept what we have and move on. We do accept our lot in life, serving is a sacrifice we are willing to make. Thank a troop, give of your time and efforts, don't just give lip service.

This coming holiday season remember those who sleep in fear, waiting for that next attack or bomb. Remember them by offering support in tangible ways. Offer to watch children so a harried parent can get some time away to replenish his/her spirits. Offer of yourself, as our military do every minute of every day.

today i got the best voice mail from my daughter thanking me for being a veteran

vets DESERVE any benefits we can give em

do'nt look to the party of elephants ,
the military is only there to secure profits for their corporations

Like the Filipino Veterans who were shafted by the Rescission Act of 1946, and are still being blocked from getting benefits and recognition by people like Senator Dick Burr (R_NC)

I served in the Royal Australian Air Force for six years and this day is special to all servicemen and women. I never went to a combat zone but knew many who had lost comrades in Vietnam and knew a few who had served in Korea. We can never repay the sacrifices those men and women made. Many many tears are shed in rememberance of their fallen comrades on this day.

Those scumbags who deny veterans (maimed or not) care for the rest of their lives are beyond reproach.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

LEST WE FORGET

It is Rememberance day here in Canada......

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

LEST WE FORGET

As a USMC vet,I think today of my friends and family who paid the price for us. I saw dick cheney lay a reath on the Unknown Soldiers tumb today. What an insult to that Soldier.

If the Congressional leaders had decided to honor their oath to defend the Constitution, Bush and Cheney would be rotting in jail, instead of looting our Treasury.

deserve

report out today that because of cutbacks, while iraq vets with ptsd will get services, they may have to cut back on what is provided to vietnam vets with ptsd....bullshit

we in cali just voted overwhelmingly to provide more benefits to our vets...and we hate bush's wars...but we love the service people

we are broke...but i would do without some basic services if it means providing more for the vets

after ww2 and korea, it was the returning vets that spurred on the economy

returning vets now eat shit....ENOUGH

According to the Republofascists you folks in California hate this country and despise our troops.

REAL Americans know that's BS.

This should begin with a program which will reimburse local hospitals for veterans' care, rather than requiring them to drive long miles to regional service centers, which often are inadequately or corruptly staffed and run.
Many elderly and disabled veterans cannot drive long distances, or drive at all. Many are poor and have no cars whatever. Diagnostic procedures may require several trips of 10-300 miles before the VA will even consider commencing treatment or surgery.

Our current system of veterans' medical treatment is shoddy, disorganized, and should be completely reformatted.

last night about the final journey home for dead Canadian soldiers. The hearse and official procession drive along the Highway of Heroes in Ontario and ordinary Canadians line the many overpasses to salute and honour them as they pass by.

It was truly moving to hear how much the support of fellow Canadians meant to that mother grieving for her son. It brought tears to my eyes.

It has always amazed and disgusted me that our nation (and many other nations as well) will think nothing of spending several billion dollars to build one war-fighting machine, and will deny and deprive care, housing and education the the brave men and women
they so blithely send off to fight and maybe die.

I have several relatives who are vets, my nephew is currently a Navy helicopter pilot - leaving next week for another tour in Bahrain - and I lost several good friends during the Viet Nam debacle.

While I hate that we still feel the need to make war, I honor those who serve when called.

I'm a Viet Nam combat vet who goes to the Viet Nam memorial here in the twin cities every veterans day. Today I started thinking about Paul Wellstone, who came every veterans day to the memorial. The first time I meet him he came up and said welcome home. When I saw him the next year he came up and said, how you doing Jeff. I couldn't believe he remembered my name. I lost five brothers I honor every year and I now include Paul with them. Thank a vet today.

Let the troops join the labor unions.

from the moment you sign on. It's true. You're dead meat. It's like being arrested: as long as you're in custody, there is nothing they cannot do to you. You get reborn when you get released.

It doesn't matter that you're in a non-combatant billet. If they tell you to pick up a rifle and get into a trench, you pick up that rifle and crawl into that trench.

Yeah, I'm a vet. I did my part of my war in an (occasionally) air-conditioned trailer atop a lovely mountain overlooking the South China Sea, and got out of almost all of the shit: sometimes rockets/rpgs fell inside the perimeter. The only casualty I ever heard of was a pilot who crashed a Crusader in a storm one day.

BTW: The only difference between a war story and a fairy tale is the way they start...Fairy tale: "Once upon a time..." War Story: "This is no shit, I was there..."

Veterans' Day started out commemorating peace, the end of the carnage of WW I. I'd support changing it to "Peace Day."

irans the gate to afganistan ,its a gate that should be closed , if obama is still determined to create more deaths in afganistan i will oppose him all the way ! no more wars of choice! enough legless vets bring them all home !

and I think the men and women that currently serve our country and all veterans are the bravest people ever. Thank you to any that are posting here and to Rachel, thank you and your husband for the sacrifices you've both made. I have no idea how that must feel. Yet, I am insulted by the phony display put on by bush and cheney. mccain ought to hide in shame for the remainder of his life. Bring our troops home and give them all the help they need and should be entitled to. They become homeless, there is a high percentage of suicides of vets returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. They come back and are treated like shit at Walter Reed. Michele Obama has pledged to work with these families and issues. I hope she can make a difference. Thank You Veterans!

had the Eagle on the Presidential Seal permanently altered to face the olive branch instead of the arrows in its talon in 1945.

His subtle message has been conveniently ignored even as Bush and Cheney often walk over the Oval Office rug. I hope the image will haunt them forever.
