Rep. Alan Grayson on the number of dead from lack of health care. His mic was cut half way through his 60 minutes. No word yet on what happened and why his time on the House floor was cut short.

As we've already noted here, Rep. Grayson's site is NamesoftheDead.com:

Every year, more than 44,000 Americans die simply because they have no health insurance. Add your story and watch Congressman Grayson read your stories on the House floor.

Dave N.: Grayson's tactic obviously upset the GOP. Politico reports:

As he began, Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.) asked for the clerk to take down Grayson's remarks -- a precursor to a complain about the tactic -- which caused the House to be adjourned for a short time.

When the House reconvened, he began reading again:

"Congressman Joe Wilson, 118 dead."

"Is it really asking too much of us that we keep people alive?" asked the Orlando Democrat, who rose to national attention earlier this year for suggesting the GOP wanted uninsured patients to die quickly. "We know according to the Harvard study we will keep these people alive."

That such dramatic tactics are necessary to cut through the right wing noise machine. It's quite an experience just allowing the video of Grayson to play through to the end.Powerful stuff.

There sure is such a thing as a political man-crush. Though I'm not a man, I also have a huge crush on him. In my case (hetero woman), it expresses itself as a deep desire to have his babies! I know it's funny, and I laugh at it myself, but I'm serious -- I think it's some kind of primal desire to help make sure that this man's extraordinarily good qualities get handed on to future generations. It's not even sexual. It's a connection with past and future and the survival of our race (human, not white). Even weirder is that I'm far past childbearing years. Does anyone else here understand this? I know it's very strange...

Too bad neither you nor I are equipped to help carry out your plan for saving our species by promoting evolution via Alan Grayson's genes.

I'm generally against polygamy, but I'd be willing to make an exception in his case.

I have never been to politico before, but I was astounded at the incredible stupidity and lack of both argumentative skills and any sort of social conscience.

One poster actually called Democrats the "party of death panels." Seriously. Sarah freaking Palin comes up with one stupid phrase (with no basis in reality) and it becomes the reason not to trust anything the Democratic party touches on healthcare?

Another said that you couldn't trust Democrats because more people were probably aborted than lost their lives due to lack of health insurance. Really. I'm not making this shit up. I think his name was "xNRA Lifer", which shows which end of the bell curve he was working from...

Last but not least were the people shouting "socialism!" and making up numbers about people waiting in line for 23 hours in Canada. Give up your Medicare, then. Why not go back to investing your money in the free market? If GW had gotten that pushed through you would have ... absolutely nothing. You can't blame our crappy health on people being unhealthy, it's just a bad argument (your car breaks because it's broken?) -- we have a systemic issue in that we don't treat healthcare like an essential service, which by virtue of virtually eliminating preventative care ensures plenty of people floating into the ER by way of the meat wagon.

Apropos is this quote:

NEWS FLASH – WHAT PASSED FOR SOME FANTASY CALLED THE AMERICAN DREAM IS D E A D. Why? Because somewhere along the way our elected officials and a good portion of our countrymen and women convinced themselves that caring about each other is a sign of weakness.” - BlueSam (from a post here)

George Patacki, who came up with that concept. BTW, rumor has it that Patacki is raising his ugly head again and is considering running against Kristen Gillibrand for her senate seat next election. Patacki also shilled for Hoffman in NY-23. Betsy is a certified insurance company shill, and even they have fired her. She is, apparently, among the unemployed. How appropriate.

I hope she lost her healtcare.

My Mother in Canada is elderly and quite sick.
She has called an ambulance at least 10 times over the last year which has never taken more than 15 minutes to arrive.
On each occasion she has spent on average, about 3 to 4 days in hospital. She gets excellent treatment, usually sharing a room with one or two other people. In each case she has only had to pay for the ambulance service-around 75 dollars.Everything else is covered.
It is my sincere hope that Americans get the care they deserve.

Call Congress and demand your Senator vote against the vitter/bennett Amendment to the Health Care Bill. Also, demand that liebermann be stripped of his chairmanship of HSC and kicked out of the Caucus.

A Public Option with a Opt Out provision will leave millions of Americans in red states to the whims of the criminally corrupt Medical Industrial Complex/Cartel.

Congressional Budget Office (CBO) score's the baucus plan at $829 Billion over a 10 year period, that is paid for. The CBO also states that it will lower the deficit by $80 Billion and it would be much lower if there was a public option.

Criminally corrupt politicians are the reason the U.S. is ranked near the bottom of every catagory when ranked next to other modern, industrialized nations. Time for publically funded elections.

lieberman $12.6M, mcconnell $7.8M, baucus $7.7M, cornyn $6.7M,
kyl $5.6M, grassley $5.4M, ensign $5.2M, conrad $5.1M, cantor $4.9M,
nelson $4.9M, burr $4.8M, boehner $4.4M, hatch $4.4M, lincoln $4.1M,
vitter $3.9M, carper $3.6M were paid by the Medical Industrial Complex to kill Health Care Reform. (Source: OpenSecrets.org, Aug. 09)

Is there any real reason to believe it was the Republicans over the Democrats?

Perhaps Grayson's commentary was simply taken "off the table" (wouldn't be the first time). There are some things that are simply inappropriate for Village discussion.

A sentiment with plenty of "bi-partisan" support.

I presume that he was reading the numbers for both democratic and republican districts. Given the weak health insurance package that the house seems to be proposing, which won't kick in until after the next general election, the democratic leadership can't be too happy about hearing the numbers of dead in their own districts.
The republicans may be always wrong but they are not always to blame.

I tried to send Grayson my story, but the website kept giving me an error. I don't know if it got through, so I'm reposting it here:
-------------------------------------

Late last year, my step-brother's father went to the doctor for a "sore throat". The doctor's visually examined his throat and sent him home.

His sore throat persisted for months, and every time he went to a doctor, they always dismissed him as simply having "just a sore throat"... a diagnoses coming not from his doctor but from *his insurance company*, unwilling to pay for lab tests simply to diagnose "a sore throat".

It wasn't until his throat started *bleeding* last April that the doctors discovered he had throat cancer. By that time, it was too late. His cancer had spread throughout his body and he was dead three months later (to the complex shock of his family and friends).

The unwillingness of his insurance company to pay for a simple "cancer screening" prevented anyone from performing the test that might have saved his life.

He leaves behind five grandchildren, including his son's 1 year old twins that will never get to know their grandfather.

to contact the CEOs of the offending corporation, and request if at least they can get to use for a couple of weeks, the vacation home the CEO was able to afford by denying the coverage to their family member. Technically the victims already paid for part of that home, since they did not get the medical care they paid for, so a time share agreement seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to expect...

I am impressed with everything this man does .... so far!

It is a sad and true fact however that big business gets to them all eventually and corrupts them. And sadly this too will happen if Grayson lasts long enough.

The plan the rich has used is brilliant isn't it? First, television has made the cost of running for office so exhorbitant that politicians need the funds provided by corporations who don't provide the necessary money until the politicians go begging for it which leaves them oweing the corporations big time. Once this happens, they are all corporate whores who would slit a voters throat if they were instructed to do so by their corporate master.

This is why we need a ban on corporate "free speech" in the form of campaign contributions. Money talks and bullshit walks!
