U.S. journalist Amy Goodman said she was stopped at a Canadian border crossing south of Vancouver on Wednesday and questioned for 90 minutes by authorities concerned she was coming to Canada to speak against the Olympics.

Goodman says Canadian Border Services Agency officials ultimately allowed her to enter Canada but returned her passport with a document demanding she leave the country within 48 hours.

Goodman, 52, known for her views opposing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, told CBC News on Thursday that Canadian border agents asked her repeatedly what subjects she would cover at scheduled speaking engagements in Vancouver and Victoria.

Goodman said she told them she planned to speak about the debate over U.S. health care reform and the wars in Asia.

After much questioning, Goodman said the officials finally asked if she would be speaking about the 2010 Olympics.

"He made it clear by saying, 'What about the Olympics?'" said Goodman. "And I said, 'You mean when President Obama went to Copenhagen to push for the Olympics in Chicago?'"

"He said, 'No. I am talking about the Olympics here in 2010.' I said, 'Oh I hadn't thought of that,'" said Goodman.

"He said, 'You're saying you're not talking about the Olympics?'"

"He was clearly incredulous that I wasn't going to be talking about the Olympics. He didn't believe me," Goodman said.

Goodman said her car was searched and the officials demanded to look at her notes and her computer.

Wow, as usual the CBC sets a bar higher than the average US medium outlet for openly and rigorously critiquing the actions of its government. Does anybody think that NBC news would even cover a similar accosting of a foreign journalist, let alone, that they would cover it so objectively?

Geraldo's picture

Which is actually pretty funny, I do contract work for the government and probably have a higher security clearance than the guys that detained me.

It only happened once, I think the guys was just in a pissy mood or something. He threatened to send me back to Canada if he ever saw me again.

I kind of thought "oh noes, not back to Canada!"

chofu67's picture

Better journalists maybe (a lot of ours come from Canada), but why are Canadian border guards such hard asses? I went through the border in Germany a few times in the early 80's and those Stalinists were no worse than the average Canadian border guard. What is with that? Anyone else observe the same thing?

Serolf Divad's picture

The Olympics? I'm sorry, but what an asinine thing to be worried about.

jhunter99844's picture

This raises two questions
1. Why would they think Amy was against it?

2. Why would they care? She is LEGENDARY but not mainstream.

Maybe she photoshopped a pick of their PM in ski gear!

The way I figure it:

1). There's no evidence that makes me believe that the Canadian border agents were doing anything more than than questioning Goodman, using pretty common police methods, to ascertain whether she was planning on contributing to the planning of civil disobedience against the upcoming Winter Olympics (it's a contentious issue in the area).

2). They should care because some forms of civil disobedience are illegal. They don't need to allow aliens to cross the border if those aliens are going to conspire to break the law, no matter if that disobedience is in the form of active or passive resistance. That Goodman was allowed to cross the border indicates that the border agents could find no evidence that Goodman was involved in such a conspiracy.

The problem here is that after her arrest at the GOP convention last year, Goodman and her colleagues were put on the DHS watch list. That's why Goodman didn't have a problem crossing from Detroit to Windsor, ONT in May of 2007 (referenced in this raw footage of the CBC interview with Goodman). Until Goodman's name is removed from the watch list, she should dot all of the i's and cross all the t's by applying for a work visa at a Canadian consulate before crossing the border again.

jhunter99844's picture

I called the Mayor and the Chief when she was arrested. I told that me and my crew who often go to MSP especially SP would never ever in a million years ever come again. A lot of people did.

miss_kitty's picture

Do you have a link for that Andy?

:P

Andy K's picture

( ;D )

The way Goodman describes it, she and her colleagues pulled up to the booth and showed their passports, then were asked to pull over. It's no until later that she's questioned about the Olympics.

I'm not saying that her name is definitely, 100% certainly on the DHS watch list, but it makes the most sense to me. Other plausible explanations are that she made some Canada-only list (some zealot doing undercover police work in Vancouver could have something to do with that), or that there were cameras in the vehicle, so the border agents thought that Goodman was going to BC to work- without the required work visa (btw, please read this thoroughly).

miss_kitty's picture

more than once, I don't see any concrete evidence for your assertion. You're reading more into this than is there by stating she is on a watch list as though it were documented fact. You don't have a link to the govt that says that Amy Goodman and/or her collegues are on a watch list.

As for her working, she was appearing at benefits for Canadian entities.

I did read that thoroughly, and it's a boilerplate response. I have to question its accuracy, since it states "Goodman said she was finally let go after given a two-day work visa, expiring Friday..." It was NOT a work visa. It specifically forbade her from work.

When we discussed this last night on chat, you dismissed anything that made the most sense to me, because I had no proof. As they say, "Sauce for the goose..."

Serendipitydude's picture

a paranoid police state repressing freedom of speech is a good thing isn't it? Kowtow much?

I was nearly arrested in BC years ago for saying "Free Tibet!" right in the face of the Chinese PM. When I said to the RCMP guy "don't you have freedom of speech here in Canada?" his response was priceless: "Hmm, I'm not sure." And he was serious.

Andy K's picture

I answered a question:

1. Why would they think Amy was against it?

Nothing that Goodman said in her interview with the CBC leads me to believe that the border agents positively thought she was against the BC Olympics. They asked her questions, that's it. That's what cops do, and these guys are border cops. I'm not endorsing what they did. I'm just pointing out that they were questioning rather than accusing her. That comes from Goodman's own words.

You want to get rid of border cops, you've got to get rid of borders. No skin off of my nose if that happens.

Peter G's picture

I'm living in a police state and did not know it. I guess that letter I got published in the Globe and Mail making fun of the Commissioner of the RCMP means I will be "nearly" arrested shortly. If Goodman had not spent 90 minutes in secondary I would never have known the hammer is about to fall. Boy did that ever blow the cover off this hidden conspiracy.

Hasa Diga Eebowai

mikeeee's picture

That was about the most sycophantic POS I've read in quite some time.

diffrntdrummr's picture

If I were to ask. What if she WAS going to speak about the Olympics?? Is there a law against speaking about the Olympics in Canada?Reading more into it my ass.Oh, and is it also OK to be put on the DHS watch list for demonstrating at a political convention? Is demonstrating at a political convention also against the law? The only reason (legal or not)that these border agents get away with this crap is because we let them. And lastly...Is it illegal to enter Canada with a camera? WTF!

But simply giving an opinion about them and conspiring to break the law in order to monkey-wrench them are two different things. And it's part of a border agent's job to try to ascertain if someone is attempting to cross the border in order to do something illegal, and to keep them out of the country if they find evidence of an illegal conspiracy.

And, yes, you are reading into this more than I wrote. I don't think she should be on any watch list, I just think that she happens to be on it. That the agent looked at her passport before pulling her into the booth for questioning makes me think that she's on a watch list, probably one compiled by DHS. As revered as she is in the prog-o-sphere, I don't think she's got much name- or face- recognition in this country, and I've got to think she's even less well known in Canada, so I don't think the agent saw her as she pulled up and thought, "Well there's trouble".

Peter G's picture

Things have changed since I lived in Canada. That was in the 70's, under Pierre Trudeau. The good old days. Sigh.

Sounds like the Canadians have kind of been a**hats about the Olympics in general what with denying ice time to American speed skaters and stuff. This event seems to have really thrown them for a loop, behaviorally speaking, and we're still months away from the opening ceremony. Thought Canadians were supposed to be so polite? This sounds like the kind of crap a redneck US border guard would pull. Really expected more from our northern neighbors. God help them if some of our nationalistic stupidity is rubbing off.

jhunter99844's picture

The American story will say she killed three Canadian border guards and ate their kids.

Blue Lensman's picture

What is it that they want to keep hidden about the Olympics? Price gouging, venue problems, housing shortage . . ?

Spacemeat's picture

Canadian rocker and political activist Matthew Good (for example, he's an advocate for the mentally ill - which in most places includes quite a large number of homeless people) has been openly critical about his home town hosting the 2010 Olympic Games, which in the eyes of some makes him akin to a terrorist.

DamOTclese's picture

That's correct, Canada has turned in to another terrorist simp country that has handed everything over to Osama bin Laden, doing everything that bin Laden wanted.

These insane Christian piles of shit surrended what the United States supposedly stands for, all without even trying to hunt down bin Laden.

Christians don't deserve to live in the United States we used to have so they've shit on our country and turned it in to a nation that their religious colleague bin Laden wants.

Serendipitydude's picture

Always good to have links as support :-), I'm usually too lazy to hunt them down.

Every time I go to BC I get anti-Americanism from Canadians, most of who it seems never go south of the border. We Americans don't have a monopoly on narrow-minded bigotry, kind of reassuring in a way ;-).

Seriously. I was in Vancouver a few summers ago and you couldn't go 50 metres without someone asking for monay and/or cigarettes. I'll admit is was a bit annoying.

What was worse, the very next summer they were all GONE!!! I was there a week and no one asked me for anything. I asked my sister where they all went, but she was unsure (except for some rumours going around.)

They must be somewhere!!

I did some research on Canada in the early days of Dubya but my wife wouldn't hear of it and has condemned us to the hell of the U.S. (you just know this is a depression and, without meaningful jobs, that double dip is coming, don't you?). Anyway, I came to the conclusion that B.C. may be beautiful, but, socially, Hollywood North is a shithole. If you look at income by quartiles, half of Vancouver is dining out big time on a Friday night and half of Vancouver is serving them for tips. Income is like a friggin' inverse normal curve with NO middle class. [Hell, could just as well be Hollywood itself.] Compare that with Quebec which is very European with a much flatter income profile. Assuming I'm not going to be one of the glitterati, I know which culture I'd prefer to live in.

wow. that is another conservative fascist government at work here...

seemed to be that her being detained at the border for no reason, (other than worrying about licking the taint of the IOC) would most likely have a chilling effect on journalism in general.

She didn't leave herself much leeway. Her itinerary only reinforces my point.

And it's certainly not expected at the Canadian Border...Unless you're coming into the US.

And that used to be true, but anyone who crosses the border regularly can tell you that the crossing in to Canada is a much bigger pain in the ass than it used to be, pre-9/11. I've heard the stories from many Canadians and (US)Americans who have, for decades, regularly crossed from Detroit to Windsor or Port Huron to Sarnia, and they all gripe that getting in to Canada, while always a quicker process than the Canada-to-US crossing, is a much bigger pain in the ass now than it was 10 years ago.

IIRC, it was the summer of '01 (it might have been '00, but either way it was pre-9/11). My son lived in western MA with his mom at the time, but he always stayed here in MI over the summers. The route we used, both ways, was through southern Ontario. Did that round trip 5 years in a row- Mom would bring him to Michigan, and I or one of the sets of grandparents would bring him back to MA. Never any more than a quick check of the adults' IDs and an, "Enjoy Canada," from your agents and, "Welcome home," from ours.

So on this one return trip, the Canadian border agent at the Bluewater Bridge asks not just for my ID, but some for my 11-year old son as well. We didn't have his birth certificate with us, so we had to go to secondary. Didn't take us more than a half an hour (remember, pre-9/11), and they believed Brendan when he told them I was his dad. and our stories jibed so we were sent on our way to Fort Erie, but it was just completely unexpected.

My point here is that there are unexpected delays and questioning at the border every day. And it didn't just start happening this week.

Unsurprising. The gov't here (I live in BC these days) is going to fairly ridiculous lengths to avoid any embarrassment to the country.

The police, for example, have just been given the power to round up the homeless and dump them in shelters during the Games, so there won't be any unsightly panhandlers on the streets of Vancouver to annoy the tourists. Charming.

And to everyone bashing the Canadians here: Grow up. Every Canadian I've met either doesn't care about the Olympics, or didn't want them. They've required ludicrous public expense, mostly to widen and improve the Sea-To-Sky highway between Vancouver and the Whistler ski resort complex where events will be happening. Basically, the BC government spent a billion-plus public dollars, during a recession, to build a nicer highway for the wealthy to drive their Lexuses up for ski vacations.

Andy K's picture

The government invested in infrastructure in the midst of a recession? Sounds like sound economics to me.

DamOTclese's picture

No, the BC government handed a billion bucks over to the rich Republinazi elite in Canada. What percentage of Canadians do you think use the ski facilities and the highways that go to them? Betcha it's less than 1% -- a billion bucks to further4 fatten the corporate fascist elite pigs.

This is the concesus I've been getting from folks in Vancouver/BC. They don't want the Olympics.

For the rich only, let the taxpayers pick up the tab.

Basically, the BC government spent a billion-plus public dollars, during a recession, to build a nicer highway for the wealthy to drive their Lexuses up for ski vacations.

Nothing about spending on ski resorts, just highways. And that money, whatever the amount, goes to the people driving the road graders and pouring the concrete. And the money that the laborers make gets spent at stores and restaurants, and the province collects taxes on it. It's not as if the BC government hands $1B to republinazis who blink their eyes to magically make a road appear.

That's simple Keynesian economics. That's what there was too little of in this spring's stimulus package in the US.

Annoyed Canuck's picture

This is fucking appalling.

I live in Vancouver and am not a fan of the Olympics. There have been massive cost overruns, which had to be covered by the city and provincial governments after construction financing by a hedge fund fell through because of the credit crisis. Our brilliant elected representatives actually tried to cover this up, but didn't get away with it.

Most of downtown Vancouver, congested at the best of times, is going to be closed to traffic during the games. It's going to be a fucking nightmare.

Artists who have received funding for events that will form part of the so-called "Cultural Olympiade" to be held during the games have been warned not to critize the Olympics, the government or VANOC (the Vancouver Organizing Committee).

A local theatre artist engaged in producing a show concurrent with the Olympics, who wrote a newsletter criticizing government arts funding cuts, was sent the following email from VANOC:

"The artist shall at all times refrain from making any negative comments respecting VANOC, the 2010 Olympics, Paralympic Games, the Olympic movement generally, Bell and/or other sponsors associated with VANOC."

He wasn't criticizing VANOC, he was criticizing cuts to public arts funding of more than 90%.

It's a fucking travesty. Amy Goodman should register a diplomatic complaint through the US State Department.

Great post. Most people who don't live in the Vancouver area have no idea of the lenghts the provincial government will go to snuff out any Anti-Olympic sentiment. The whole reason for the Olympic bid in the first place was so that wealthy land developers could get the funding to upgrade the "Sea-to-Sky" Highway between Vancouver and Whistler, where most of the events will be taking place.

Do you have any idea how many people are stopped and questioned at the US/Canadian border everyday?? Thousands.

Most of the time it means nothing, they just ask you stupid questions to see if you contradict yourself. If you do they know that you are hiding something. They suggest things to you to see your reaction. And remember, these are civil servants... they take their time.

A Non-Story!! Can't believe its on CL.

and their reporters were stunned. the CBSA would not answer their questions, and having lived next to Canada my entire life, I have never heard of ANYONE being told to leave in 48 hours. Even the reporter interviewing Goodman didn't realise it was a visa. How many people stopped at the border have been told to get the hell out in 48 hours and had a highly restrictive visa smashed into their face.

Why don't you watrch the video. She WAS stopped a couple years ago for an hour, and it WAS routine. Nothing on the radar for her.

Love how people who don't look into a story declare it unimportant.

Peter G's picture

Perhaps massively overblown would be the better term. One should always question the actions of authorities. BTW restrictive visas are common as dirt, especially for anyone with an arrest record. I know many truckers with ancient criminal records from youthful indiscretions who can cross the border to make deliveries but not for any personal business whatsoever. I do wonder if a Canadian journalist were detained at the US border for ninety minutes it would make the network news. I doubt it would even be mentioned on this blog.

Likely because she said she was only going to be in Canada for 48 hours first. That is one of the routine questions they ask .. "how long until you plan on returning the the USA?". So they were likely just repeating what she told them.

I have crossed the border a 1000 times, pulled in maybe 20 times. Spent anywhere from 10 minutes to 3 hours getting questioned or waiting for clearance. It happens everyday. Sometime your number comes up randomly, sometimes the border guard just hates you .... its just happens. And they always treat you with suspicion because that is what they are trained to do.

Get over it.

Yeh, me too....but never heard of a 48 hour visa.

Clever. A towering intellect, you.

You still haven't looked into the whole story, have you?

you took the time to read it and comment on it on C&L. But thank you for imposing your persomal opinions on everyone else who also found it worthy of a read and a comment.

You came... and commented. Nuff said?

"If the US government enforced its banking laws like it did its park regulations, we wouldn't be
in this damn park in the first place." OCCUPY.!!

Sweetgrass. It seems that two of the people that were with me had violated the laws on how long they could stay. They made us pay a lot of cash at the border to cross and when we came back they mailed our money back. Wasn't very funny at the time but we laughed about it later.

I'm in Vancouver as well. I'm getting out of Dodge for the duration, off to Salt Spring Island until the insanity is over. To give the 'Murcuns an idea of just how resented the impending international party on the taxpayer's dime for a corrupt, easily bribed IOC event:

- The vote on wether or not to host the olympics was held in Vancouver & only in Vancouver. Despite the fact that folks in Ft. St. John, Kelowna, Galiano & Powell River are going to be shelling out for decades to come (think of Montreal, still paying for their IOC debacle).

- that dipshit clock they built in the middle of downtown to countdown the time to the start the party looks strikingly like an enormous raised middle digit, flipping the bird to everyone who voted against this goddamn waste. They have to post a guard for the thing because they can't leave it alone for 5 minutes w/o it being vandalized.

- VANOC has been sending its rent-a-mountie Goon Squad to the homes & workplaces of Olympic critics not to ask questions of them, but of their neighbours & coworkers a la Hoover's FBI.

..plus lots more, including the predictions that those of us who opposed throwing money down the toilet voted against this thing are coming true, that it would fall behind schedule & go way over budget. This thing isn't merely unpopular, it's positively loathed.

Thanks to the Christanic Bush terrorist regime which handed the Islamic terrorists everything they prayed to Allah for, the United States and Canada are Christofascist States.

The terrorists have won.

The only reason that she was targeted was because she was on some watch list that had her down as a pro-democracy type, therefore a threat by american standards. They got scared that she was going to bad mouth the Olympics...ha! She could care less about the fricking Olympics. Sure it is actually a big game that is played by corporate interest while the tax payer pays the bill. and sure the host city always kicks out the homeless people to shine it all up for the international media to see and sure property taxes go up and sure prices go through the roof and etc and etc. But Amy has far bigger fish to fry than that old game. Idiots! It just brings attention to the plight of the locals and the corruption of the Olympics just because of their paranoia.

... maybe she could turn her sights on Peter McKay ...he;d be a pile of blubber in 2 minutes ...

I'm ashamed that our stupid right wing bushlight canadian government has turned into such a fearful thing. The olympics make me sick with their high handed approach to everything. They actually made the BC govt change bylaws so if you had a protest sign on for the olympics on your lawn your house could be searched. We will end up paying billions for this at a time when our ecomony is forcing us to cut back on essentials.

A party for the rich that few working class folks will get to enjoy except on advertisement laden television.

And our premier is taking the glory before the various scandals hit him and he's forced out.

I watched Montreal struggle with their billion dollar bill in the 60's. I think they paid it off not many years ago. For what?

Rant done.

the IOC disallowing 'female' ski-jumping ... and overriding Cdn courts to do it ... that is just F'd Up ...

There is a restaurant in the West End of Vancouver called Olympia Pizza. They've been in business there for over 15 years with nary a qualm from anyone. The Vanoc goon squad descended en masse and threatened legal action if the name wasn't changed immediately. The owner told them to go shove it up their asses. Vanoc is a law unto themselves.

This shouldn't come as any suprise, the Harper govt. would not allow George Galloway into the country despite the fact he had already been in the US and Israel.
Canada has been drifting to the right for a long time. This is easily the most authoritarian and secretive government we have ever had. If they ever get a majority there won't be any CBC around to report on it.

Love you, Amy, you're a true journalist, keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Basically, the BC government spent a billion-plus public dollars, during a recession, to build a nicer highway for the wealthy to drive their Lexuses up for ski vacations."
I live along the "billion dollar" highway to the Olympics I drive a '94 4Runner[my other car is a Lexus disguised as my wife's mini van].They have been talking about improving the highway for oh 20 years now. Certainly the Olympics pushed things ahead but the road was going to be improved if for no other reason to address the safety issues inherent in the highways location.
Every time I hear somebody bitch about the games or the highway improvements [and I am no fan of the idea of holding the games] I am reminded of something the great philosopher Peter Griffin once said: "It's like having sex with Kobe Bryant, you can kick and scream all you want but it's...it's going to happen".

Obviously some right wing pig put her on the computerized TERRORIST WATCH LIST at Homeland Security. No doubt it's police harassing her for winning her freedom after Sat. Aug 30, 2008. Saint Paul, MN Police Department arrested her illegally.

Our cops are really OUT OF CONTROL and need to be REINED IN.

THEY'RE A PACK OF MILITARIST NAZIS. They're BROWN SHIRTS.

Amy should get an ACLU Lawyer to get her off the WATCH LIST.

Does anyone from SLC remember any of this heavy handed government treatment prior to and during your winter games?
