After Vile Comments Posted on Malia Obama, Freeper Spouts BS About Left-Wing Blogs As a Smokescreen

This saddens me. Anyone who has ever blogged knows that there are the occasional commenters who post things that embarrass us. If a blog in question has a commenting policy that forbids racist, abusive, violent, or otherwise inappropriate comments, we at Crooks and Liars don't make an issue of it if, on a blog we disagree with, some commenter slips through their gate with a comment that violates those policies.
We also know that some right-wing blogs, namely Michelle Malkin and her Hot Air brigade, run through our comment threads regularly looking for comments that might embarrass us. That's not the reason for our policy, we simply have standards.
When this Free Republic "spokesman" is given an opportunity to distance himself and the blog from some ridiculous comments that he and the blog were not initially responsible for, he instead uses his fifteen seconds of fame to exclaim that the left wing blogs "have no standards." Really.
And it's not like we can't prove him wrong. Crooks and Liars has a comment policy, and sitemonitors checking the threads regularly, as well as technology in place that specifically bans use of certain highly offensive words.
Daily Kos has policies in place and their readership and front-pagers take responsibility for removing comments that are offensive. I laughed when I saw that the Kos comment policy singles out certain individuals:
The exception to the normal troll rating golden rule of "rate the comment, not who makes it" is for people so disruptive to the community that they need to be quickly autobanned. This is a very difficult threshold to reach, and is reserved almost entirely for freepers or other trolls here only to disrupt.
Heck, sorry to give them a link, but even RedState has a comment policy. And Free Republic posts this disclaimer: "Opinions posted on Free Republic are those of the individual posters and do not necessarily represent the opinion of Free Republic or its management." Okay then. Why not point that out to David Schuster, distance yourself from the racist slurs that appeared (and according to Schuster, re-appeared?) at your site, and take advantage of the free publicity to show your blog is represented by a classy, intelligent, and responsible Net Citizen?

David N.: Free Republic has had this problem many times in the past, and it has generally been good about taking the most hateful material down promptly. However, according to Raw Story, these comments were kept live on the site for more than a day.
The Freeper spokesman in the video heatedly denied that the comments went back up, but it's worth noting the exchange reported by Chris Parry of the Vancouver Sun, whose reportage on this has been the subject of the ensuing side controversy/red herring about whether he acted as an agent provocateur. Whether true or not, if his reportage on Robinson's initial response is accurate, it's fairly damning:
After attention from other blogs, the thread was suppressed and placed under review, but before long it was returned to the site intact, and attracted a new series of racial slurs when the original complaint email was posted publicly to the site, with the sender's email address intact.
"The writer has a point," wrote site owner Jim Thompson sarcastically. "We should steer clear of Obama's children. They can't help it if their old man is an American-hating Marxist pig."
"I agree Jim," wrote commenter, by the nickname NoobRep. "The kids didn't pick their commie pinko pansy of a father. Nor did they choose to be put into the spotlight. But Obama/Soetoro is fair game and so is his witch of a wife."
"Poor kids. I hope they're not 'punished with a baby'," wrote another. "Hopefully they won't deal cocaine like the Kenyan."
"DIRTBAGS! All of them. Our [White House] is now a joke to the rest of the world. We have no respect and this is not going to turn out well, mark my words. We will be hit, and much worse than last time. We are now seen as weak and vulnerable. Ghetto and Chicago thugs have taken over."
Only after significant negative attention from a host of left wing political blogs did the maintainers of the Free Republic site place the thread under review for a second time, before finally pulling it.

like this I really cannot believe that there are people who still hold onto racist views and with such vehemence. But apparently there are. Not only did I see the whole comment thread last night on DailyKos, I also had the misfortune of reading in the paper this morning that a PA countryclub tried to ban some local inner city summer camps from using their pool -- after they had initially agreed to. It happened when the mostly latino and black children arrived; the children were subjected to racist slurs and members pulling their children out of the pool.
And idiots wonder why my brethren of color are pissed.

During Sunday's ESPN broadcast of their NFL Countdown program (9/28/03), Limbaugh was talking about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, who is black:
Limbaugh: "I don't think he's been that good from the get-go. I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. I think the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They're interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well. I think there's a little hope invested in McNabb and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he really didn't deserve. The defense carried this team." [Note 1]

Before he made those comments, Limbaugh knew that his illegal drug habit was about to be exposed. There was no problem with his radio show, but it was doubtful ESPN would keep an unrepentant junkie on its payroll.
So Rush appeals to his base and embraces his victimhood. Instead of being fired for his dirty little secret, Limbaugh gets fired by the "liberal" media for "refusing to embrace political correctness" and "telling it like it is."

I dunno, maybe I'm getting old, but it seems like the world is getting louder and dumber. I can't watch TV without being insulted by commercials that are more about 'tude than the item being sold, or fluff bunny local news anchors who just spend the entire time laughing at inane jokes. People talk too much to loud in the office, on elevators, on buses, to each other or on cell-phones, or they're dragging their little kids along without controlling them, since if they're not disturbed it's okay.
There's a sales rep who occasionally steps out into the hall to take a phone call, and she walks up and down the hall, talking in the usual over-loud cell phone manner. Unfortunately, her path takes her right past MY work area. It's a pain trying to edit a soundbite when I have someone blathering in the hallway.
I think some of the louder/dumber is that you and I are from a generation where communication was less immediate - no internet, no cell phones, no Twitter, no text messages - and we're used to more of an intellectual space, as it were. My best friend used to tell me to get sattelite dish so I could get all kinds of programs. This is my right wing buddy who thinks Fox is fair and balanced. I used to think he had a good head on his shoulders and he did at one time. If his belief system has been altered by a steady diet of cable news then that is last thing I want. I hve an antenna and get ABC,CBS,NBC and PTV. Fox is on there also but I don't watch it unless its sports. but he was born in Tenn. in 1908 and a victim of his time. He was a seperate but equl person and we all know the shortcomings of that ideology. But one thing I respect about him was when I was about 6 or 7 I was with him in town one day when a klansman tried to recruit him. He flatly told him that he wouldn't join any group that was so cowardly that they had to hide under sheets in order to have courage enough to tell some one you hate them. He said I will tell them to their face just like I am talking to you right now. I have always admired him for that stance even though about 2 weeks later he whipped my ass on that same court house square in public when he caught me drinking out of the colored only fountain. My father realized that really the only difference between him and our neighbors was the color of our skin. I have always tried to concentrate on the content of a persons character not their skin color.These so called freepers have no redeemiable content to their character.
This is why the republicans can't and won't capture the vast majority of moderate/conservative members of the African American and other ethnic communities. There is a very real fear that comments like the ones posted about Malia capture the real underlying feeling of many Republicans. And when, in situations like this, not enough is said and done to rebuke the hate, it validates the fears many people have. A word of advice to the republicans; if you really don't believe the racist, world domination vitriol spewing from their mouths, curb your mouthpieces.

The 'agent prvoacateur' that bluegal describes in her blogpost is who this guy is, a Moby poster, that wants other liberals to follow suit. Calling this a red herring is a joke. He becomes the story he wants to write about.
Nothing at all excuses the comments, but to totally disregard this aspect of the story is just wrong. It'd be like describing the fact that Mark Fuhrman's blatant use of the N word in his job and his bragging on tape that he had employed framing techniques in his police work against blacks was a red herring in the OJ Simpson trial.
