When the Earth is upside down like that, why doesn't everything fall off?

.. yeah .. I know .. but that *was* my first thought!

I think I'm gonna get wet .. even here in the southwest corner of Virginia.

This is too much. Can we ban cars from showing up at the workplace, cuz carbon monoxide is bad for us too.

Your Nose Knows: The Invisible Threat of 'Thirdhand Smoke'

Before this week, employees at the Indiana University Health medical center were free to step off the nonsmoking campus and light up a cigarette. Sure, co-workers and patients would probably notice the telltale odor on the smoker's clothes, skin and breath -- especially if they happened to share an elevator -- but they could do little more than plug their nose in defense.

That all changed on Monday when the medical center upgraded its policy: Employees are now prohibited from smoking during the workday. Period.

I poured concrete there last Friday. Smoked the whole time I was there. Even smoked while I sat next to a "no smoking" sign outside the Science dept. Fuck the smoking police.

Humpty Dumpty was pushed.

CafeenMan's picture

My company just instituted the same sort of thing. You can't smoke on campus (it's a medical facility) and you aren't allowed to leave campus on your breaks. And you aren't allowed to smell like smoke. But it's ok to go around sniffing people I guess.

What makes this really funny is that they CLAIM it's because they care about our health and that's their sole motivator for this policy.

At the same time they have junk machines all over that sells snickers and cokes that they make a profit from. So smoking is bad but being saturated with corn syrup, sugar and a huge amount of empty calories is ok.

While banning smoke they are promoting diabetes. But it's because they care about our health.

xagzan's picture

Eating snickers and drinking coke doesn't affect the people around you. Personally I can't stand that cigarette stench going in my nose.

NLRB Rule Requiring Posters In Workplace Infuriates Business Groups

WASHINGTON -- The federal labor board announced Thursday that it has finalized a rule requiring employers to post notices in the workplace informing workers of their rights under the National Labor Relations Act. The poster will be a modest 11 by 17 inches, similar to the Department of Labor notices already posted in workplaces across the country, and it will be provided free by the federal government.

Business groups and their allies are furious.
They say that the rule is too onerous, and that it benefits labor unions.

If hanging a fucking poster is too onerous for these idiots, how in the hell do they get their asses out of bed everyday? Jesus. I just don't believe this shit anymore. And it what? Benefits unions? How the fuck does it do that? Do they need a poster that says you do not have to organise?
Can you believe the whingeing hue and cry from these crybaby thieving cheats?

"Just when we thought we had seen it all from the NLRB, it has reached a new low in its zeal to punish small-business owners," Karen Harned, executive director of NFIB’s Small Business Legal Center, said in a statement.

They claim hanging the poster is a "punitive new rule," and those assholes at the Chamber of Commerce are wondering aloud "whether the NLRB even had the authority to mandate the postings."

Two things: It benefits employees, for free. We know businesses don't give a crap about them, but the assholes could pretend for 2 minutes that they do. And if they're obeying the law, they should not mind the posters.

Congressional tourists avoid apartheid in Israel: As a Palestinian member of the Knesset, I know American lawmakers aren't being shown the reality of life here

Americans, do you know where your member of Congress is?

He or she may well be visiting Israel right now. In fact, 81 members of the House of Representatives -- nearly 20 percent of the whole body -- are expected here this month, according to new reports. If challenged, the representatives (numbering 55 Republicans and 26 Democrats) are likely to say a few words about looking for business opportunities good for their constituents or the need to provide for the security of Israel, which has cost American taxpayers billions of dollars. That's their business and yours.

As a member of the Israeli Knesset, I am concerned that they're on a propaganda tour run by an affiliate arm of AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which bills itself as "America's leading pro-Israel lobby," yet has helped stymie Palestinian freedom aspirations for decades. Yes, the members will have a token meeting or two with officials of the Palestinian Authority, but they certainly are not going to learn of the discrimination and occupation that the state of Israel imposes on the Palestinian people in its midst.

Rick Steves donating $1 million in 'Bush tax cuts' to Edmonds arts center

EDMONDS -- Travel TV host and publisher Rick Steves is giving $1 million to the Edmonds Center for the Arts, and he's making a political statement in doing so.

Steves said Thursday his donation equals what he saved from the tax cuts approved by former President George W. Bush beginning in 2001.

"Over the last decade, my tax burden has decreased even as public funding for important local programs and institutions has been decimated -- a trend I find alarming," he said in a written statement.

Steves is encouraging other people who are financially well off to make similar donations.

"It's my hope to inspire other caring high-income people to step up and fill those funding gaps with private donations, to support causes that should be borne collectively by a community -- arts centers, parks, schools, libraries, local symphonies, and to speak out on the wisdom of rolling back the tax cuts for our wealthy."

Why Rick Perry Would Put the World on a Fast Track to Total Meltdown: From calling the BP disaster an "act of god" to responding to his state's drought with prayer, Perry's anti-environmental resume is extensive.

A report released in July by the Texas Water Development Board estimated that industry (fracking) uses about 12 billion gallons of water annually for hydrofracking in Texas now, but that demand will grow to 39.1 billion gallons before 2030. ...

Of course, why would Perry bite the hand that feeds him? The governor has raked in over $11 million from the industry, which is why it is no surprise that his response to unprecedented drought and warming in his home state would spur a response like, "We'll be fine. As my dad says, 'it'll rain. It always does.'"

I just saw this article about him:

http://news.yahoo.com/perry-bills-feds-349m-i...

He apparently has sent the federal government a bill for $349M for putting undocumented immigrants into jail.

As the government points out, Parry apparently has been against that border wall; he has been in favor of discount tuition rates for children of undocumented immigrants; etc., etc.

This guy will change his mind on anything just to get elected.

As for that $349M bill, Parry ought to send the Federal Government a check for the billions of dollars he has accepted over the years.....not just Obama's stimulus money, but the other federal monies he has received the entire decade he has been governor.

Great interview with anthropologist David Graeber

What is Debt? – An Interview with Economic Anthropologist David Graeber

here

Intriguing stuff from a perspective that the economists completely miss.

Well, they miss a whole lot of stuff, like foreseeing the meltdown.

I am still absorbing it. Give it a look.

Excerpt (SM sorry for four paragraphs but…) my emphasis:

What’s been happening since Nixon went off the gold standard in 1971 has just been another turn of the wheel – though of course it never happens the same way twice. However, in one sense, I think we’ve been going about things backwards. In the past, periods dominated by virtual credit money have also been periods where there have been social protections for debtors. Once you recognize that money is just a social construct, a credit, an IOU, then first of all what is to stop people from generating it endlessly? And how do you prevent the poor from falling into debt traps and becoming effectively enslaved to the rich? That’s why you had Mesopotamian clean slates, Biblical Jubilees, Medieval laws against usury in both Christianity and Islam and so on and so forth.

Since antiquity the worst-case scenario that everyone felt would lead to total social breakdown was a major debt crisis; ordinary people would become so indebted to the top one or two percent of the population that they would start selling family members into slavery, or eventually, even themselves.

Well, what happened this time around? Instead of creating some sort of overarching institution to protect debtors, they create these grandiose, world-scale institutions like the IMF or S&P to protect creditors. They essentially declare (in defiance of all traditional economic logic) that no debtor should ever be allowed to default. Needless to say the result is catastrophic. We are experiencing something that to me, at least, looks exactly like what the ancients were most afraid of: a population of debtors skating at the edge of disaster.

And, I might add, if Aristotle were around today, I very much doubt he would think that the distinction between renting yourself or members of your family out to work and selling yourself or members of your family to work was more than a legal nicety. He’d probably conclude that most Americans were, for all intents and purposes, slaves.

Republicans want to establish 'right to work' slavery in america, in order to support the ruling class elites for the 21st century. They see the same writing on the wall that we all do, and they are throwing Americans under the bus to secure a place [they think] among the privileged few in the ruling class.

I for one, don't think the good people of America are going to accept becoming slaves so that a tiny minority can continue to be privileged and powerful.

The republicans [and many Democrats] have made the wrong choice, they chose against the people of America, and for the privileged power elites, and they are going to pay for their error.

The people of America, one by one, are becoming aware of the monster that has our heads in it's noose.

Steppenwolf - MONSTER

Once the religious, the hunted and weary
Chasing the promise of freedom and hope
Came to this country to build a new vision
Far from the reaches of kingdom and pope
Like good Christians, some would burn the witches
Later some got slaves to gather riches

But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands to court the wild
And she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light

And once the ties with the crown had been broken
Westward in saddle and wagon it went
And 'til the railroad linked ocean to ocean
Many the lives which had come to an end
While we bullied, stole and bought our a homeland
We began the slaughter of the red man

But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands to court the wild
And she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light

The blue and grey they stomped it
They kicked it just like a dog
And when the war over
They stuffed it just like a hog

And though the past has it's share of injustice
Kind was the spirit in many a way
But it's protectors and friends have been sleeping
Now it's a monster and will not obey

(Suicide)
The spirit was freedom and justice
And it's keepers seem generous and kind
It's leaders were supposed to serve the country
But now they won't pay it no mind
'Cause the people grew fat and got lazy
And now their vote is a meaningless joke
They babble about law and order
But it's all just an echo of what they've been told
Yeah, there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watchin'

Our cities have turned into jungles
And corruption is stranglin' the land
The police force is watching the people
And the people just can't understand
We don't know how to mind our own business
'Cause the whole worlds got to be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
No matter who's the winner
We can't pay the cost
'Cause there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watching

(America)
America where are you now?
Don't you care about your sons and daughters?
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster
