From the Cafferty File:

Yet another sign that when economic times are tough, things can get ugly: A new report suggests that right-wing extremism in the U.S. may be on the rise. The Department of Homeland Security says these groups might be using the recession and the election of the country’s first African-American president as tools to recruit members.

They say there’s “no specific information” on planned violence by domestic right-wing terrorists; but real-estate foreclosures, unemployment and tight credit could all lead to a “fertile recruiting environment.” There’s even the possibility of confrontations between these groups and government authorities.

The report says many right-wing extremists are antagonistic toward President Obama and his perceived policies on issues like immigration, expanding social programs to minorities and restrictions on owning guns.

It also points to concerns about anti-Semitism, saying some people are blaming the loss of jobs and home foreclosures on a conspiracy planned by a “cabal of Jewish financial elites.”

The report cites “lone wolves and small terrorist cells” as the biggest threat — because their low profile makes it hard to catch them before they act.

The Southern Poverty Law Center agrees that President Obama’s election may have boosted membership in some groups, but questions the link to the economy.

Meanwhile at least one conservative radio talk show host suggests that this report is meant to step on free speech and First Amendment Rights — which the Department of Homeland Security denies. It’s probably worth pointing out that the Obama administration also issued a warning about left-wing extremists in January.

Here’s my question to you: What should be done about a potential increase in right-wing extremism?

Fox Business Network anchor Cody Willard didn't appear to be very "fair and balanced" as he let out his opinion of Democrats' economic policy during a tea party protest in Boston. "When are we going to wake up and start fighting the fascism that seems to be permeating the country?" asked an excited Willard. "The fascism -- the definition of it is big business and government getting in bed together. That is what these people are fighting. We have about 700 people here. They are starting to rally," he said.

As Susie noted The Independent covered the toxic dumping and illegal fishing off the coast of Somalia and she asked which corporate media outlet would point out the big picture in this story. I'm still waiting for that to happen but as usual, Amy Goodman is doing the job the corporate media refuses to.

From Democracy Now:

President Obama vowed an international crackdown to halt piracy off the coast of Somalia Monday soon after the freeing of US cargo ship captain Richard Phillips, who had been held hostage by Somali pirates since last Wednesday. While the pirates story has dominated the corporate media, there has been little to no discussion of the root causes driving piracy. We speak with consultant and analyst Mohamed Abshir Waldo. In January, he wrote a paper titled “The Two Piracies in Somalia: Why the World Ignores the Other?”

Transcript below the fold.

I never thought I'd hear myself saying this, but when is the rest of the media going to get on board with Joe Scarborough and ask Norm Coleman to concede the election in Minnesota to Al Franken? When are they going to ask the GOP leadership who are telling Coleman to keep up this fight to stop and that the public has had enough of their nonsense?

This is yesterday's news but this game is getting old really fast. I hope the citizens of Minnesota are letting both Norm Coleman and Gov. Pawlenty know that they're tired of this and would like to have two Senators representing their state. Thank you Joe Scarborough for telling the truth in this moment of candor and I hope I don't see you back tracking any time soon.

Scarborough: Seriously. Norm, I like you. You lost. Okay. Can we seat a senator so Amy [Klobuchar] doesn't have to do the job of two Senators? It is seriously not fair to constituents in Minnesota to drag this out any longer. It is over Norm, okay. It is over.

No Norm it isn't fair. I just wonder what sort of cushy job in return for his work Coleman has been offered to keep this fight up for the GOP. They want to see that 59th Senate seat for the Democrats about as much as any of them look forward to having a root canal done.

Rachel Maddow talks to political consultant Stephen Gordon about whether there is a rift in the tea bag movement between Libertarians and the Republican party. It seems the GOP may have hijacked the idea of the tea bag protests from the Libertarians and the Ron Paul movement. I'm sure it will make for some interesting footage if some of those original tea bag protesters show up to protest the tea parties on tax day.

Keith hits Fox News for its "unfair and unbalanced" coverage of the tea bag protests.

John Amato:

Keith didn't focus on the afternoon lineup of conservatives starting with Cavuto and ending with Greta who are actively supporting the astroturfing tea-baggers, but went through the rest of the news programming and found out that they supported it like it was seventeen seventy something....

Hardball: Spain to Prosecute Bush Officials?

Chris Matthews ask neocon Frank Gaffney and David Corn whether Spain has any legal standing to prosecute Bush officials for war crimes. Of course Gaffney doesn't think the U.S. needs to abide by our treaty agreements or any sort of international laws. He also claims our current situation has nothing to do with the Nuremberg trials.

Why does Matthews feel it's necessary to keep putting this neocon Gaffney on his show? It reminds me of the way he would trot Tom DeLay out there every chance he got as someone any of were are supposed to take seriously.

Lou Dobbs promoting the tea parties and comparing the grass roots anti-war movement on the left and MoveOn to those organizing the tea parties now. Both Dobbs and Brianna Keilar fail to mention the involvement of Fox News and corporate lobbyists who are funding the movement. As John pointed out, even Howard Kurtz on Dobbs' own network hit Fox News for their promotion of the tea parties, and it's costing them a great deal of money to do it.

Apparently Dobbs didn't think his fellow CNN anchor's reporting was worth noting in this supposed fair and balanced report of his. I'm sure if Dobbs ever wants to leave CNN, Fox News will happily bring him on board.
