Harry Reid: Social Security 'Off the Table'

As I said after his appearance on Meet the Press a few weeks ago, thank you Harry Reid for pushing back against the rhetoric we've been hearing on Social Security. Now it seems he's gone a bit further. Here's more from TPM -- Harry Reid Takes Social Security 'Off The Table':

At an event with progressive activists last week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took major Social Security cuts and privatization completely off the legislative table.

"As long as I'm the Majority Leader, I'm going to do everything within my legislative powers to prevent privatizing or eliminating Social Security," Reid said. "I'll simply say it's off the table." [...]

Reid's been a pretty staunch defender of Social Security, but this statement goes a bit further than previous ones. Most recently, on Meet the Press, he said he wouldn't be a part of any effort to undermine the program. But now, he's taken privatization and raising the retirement age off the table.

That's significant given a fairly broad consensus among conservative Democrats and Republicans that the retirement age should be bumped up. With Republicans in control of the House, the Senate could end up being the firewall protecting Social Security from those sorts of cuts.

"Redefining" rape? In other words, the Republicans are not going to do a damned thing about cutting spending or creating jobs and they figure a nice fat piece of red meat thrown to the base may be enough to distract them. So these nasty, anti-woman, sex-hating perverts want to take it out on the poor and the desperate.

I have a little proposal of my own. If any male member of Congress is found to have paid for an abortion, he should lose his job, his pension and any benefits -- because after all, if he's a federal employee, that's using federal money to pay for an abortion! And I'm willing to help raise money to offer a reward for that verifiable information, because God wants me to help punish these hypocritical transgressors:

Rape is only really rape if it involves force. So says the new House Republican majority as it now moves to change abortion law.

For years, federal laws restricting the use of government funds to pay for abortions have included exemptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. (Another exemption covers pregnancies that could endanger the life of the woman.) But the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act," a bill with 173 mostly Republican co-sponsors that House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has dubbed a top priority in the new Congress, contains a provision that would rewrite the rules to limit drastically the definition of rape and incest in these cases.

With this legislation, which was introduced last week by Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), Republicans propose that the rape exemption be limited to "forcible rape." This would rule out federal assistance for abortions in many rape cases, including instances of statutory rape, many of which are non-forcible. For example: If a 13-year-old girl is impregnated by a 24-year-old adult, she would no longer qualify to have Medicaid pay for an abortion. (Smith's spokesman did not respond to a call and an email requesting comment.)

Given that the bill also would forbid the use of tax benefits to pay for abortions, that 13-year-old's parents wouldn't be allowed to use money from a tax-exempt health savings account (HSA) to pay for the procedure. They also wouldn't be able to deduct the cost of the abortion or the cost of any insurance that paid for it as a medical expense.

There used to be a quasi-truce between the pro- and anti-choice forces on the issue of federal funding for abortion. Since 1976, federal law has prohibited the use of taxpayer dollars to pay for abortions except in the cases of rape, incest, and when the pregnancy endangers the life of the woman. But since last year, the anti-abortion side has become far more aggressive in challenging this compromise. They have been pushing to outlaw tax deductions for insurance plans that cover abortion, even if the abortion coverage is never used. The Smith bill represents a frontal attack on these long-standing exceptions.

Howard Fineman gives us a big heaping dose of false equivalencies by comparing the birthers who are trying to delegitimize President Obama to those on "the left" that were upset that George W. Bush had the presidential election stolen for him by the Supreme Court in 2000. Yeah Howard, those two groups of people are just alike.

I just got back from the Rancho Mirage protest of the Koch Brothers, which was put on by the good people of Common Cause. The weather was ideal, as what appeared to well over a thousand people came in by bus and by car to send a message to the Billionaire Caucus secret meeting put on by the Kochs. In the video that I recorded, you can see that there were plenty of Riverside County sheriff's deputies out patrolling their hideout; you might say it was way overdone for this event, but we're talking about billionaires, after all. It's ironic that the only reason there were that many deputies available to guard the Billionaire Caucus was that Riverside County received crucial stimulus money from the Obama administration.

Despite the Koch claim that the stimulus “failed,” it helped save dozens of jobs for Riverside County sheriffs. In recent years, the Riverside County sheriff’s department faced massive budget shortfalls, according to Melissa Nieburger, a spokeswoman for the department who spoke to ThinkProgress. President Obama’s Recovery and Reinvestment Act, also known as the stimulus, provided $13 million in emergency funding and helped maintain about 50 sheriff jobs in the county.

How tight was the security during the August health-care town halls? I don't usually go to live rallies because it's tough on my nerve damage and I'm paying for it today, but I really wanted to show some support for this statement made by Common Cause. And it was a big success.

Apparently the Washington Post's Jennifer Rubin got her knickers in a knot and was upset that we staged a protest against the Billionaire Caucus.

A Koch representative whom I contacted had this comment on the day's events: "This is the kind of 'civil debate' the left wants to have after Tucson?" One additional note: Inside the same conference center as the conservatives was a conference of judges from the Ninth Circuit. The recent death of a federal judge in Arizona did not give the mob pause about the propriety of their actions.

Rubin didn't bother to seek a response from Common Cause, the Courage Campaign or CrooksandLiars. I'd say that's pretty shoddy journalism coming from the Washington Post.

The point of the rally was that the Citizens United ruling has turned corporations into people which is now allowing them to flood the market with millions of dollars, which will now forever corrupt our democracy that were previously excluded under McCain/Feingold. Just the threat from a corporation to attack a sitting member of Congress if they sponsor something that Corporate America doesn't like can be enough to sway their minds out of pure fear. A House race can be influenced by a million dollars or less, which is chump change to the Koches or many other corporations. And anything the Koch Brothers do is often tied to their own profit making. Just look at Prop 23 in California that they funded, but which ultimately failed. They stood to make a lot of cash if it went through.

Lucas O'Connor explains:

Trying to list all the beneficiaries of the Kochs and their rich friends would be a daunting task. Suffice it to say, they are the wallet for just about every right wing cause you can think of — from tea party candidates and ballot measures like California’s pro-pollution Prop 23, to right wing think tanks like the Cato Institute and astro-turf front groups like Freedomworks and Americans for Prosperity.

One of the country’s worst polluters — with business interests in everything from healthcare to the derivatives trading that helped push our economy off a cliff, the Koch brothers have spread hundreds of millions of dollars to protect their narrow ideological and financial interests over the years -- ensuring that the agenda of billionaires is inserted at every level of our government and political discourse, and often at the expense of the middle class. No one has worked harder to kill Wall Street Reform, Healthcare Reform, or Energy Reform than the Kochs.

This is the meeting where the Kochs and their allies come together to refine their strategy; The billionaires prepare the agenda, which is packaged by the right-wing media echo chamber to sow fear and anxiety amongst unwitting foot soldiers who provide “grassroots cover” for right wing lawmakers as they push policies that undermine the middle class in DC.

It’s a sophisticated shell game that the Kochs and their allies are playing — steeped in secrecy, profit motive and ideological extremism -- as described in a profile written by Jane Mayer of New Yorker Magazine. Past attendees at Koch sponsored events include Glenn Beck, and Supreme Court Justices Thomas and Scalia. This weekend’s junket will also be attended by newly minted House Majority Leader Eric Cantor. Ultimately, the tentacles of the 'Kochtopus' stretch out in all directions from this meeting.

The KochBros funded much of the Tea Party movement when it started, and if we go back in time, their father was a big John Birch Society supporter. Remember, the Birchers accused Eisenhower of being a "card-carrying Communist". Do you have to wonder where the cries that Obama is a socialist originated, or where the Birthers arose from?

These were the “Birchers,” members of the John Birch Society, a far-right organization that originated the myth of the U.N.’s black helicopters, of fluoride poison in our drinking water and of communists hidden in every corner — even the Oval Office. Yes, they argued that Ike Eisenhower was a Commie.

Egyptians ready for tomorrow

Though Egypt has had its Internet services shut down for nearly a week Egyptians are still finding ingenious ways to get their message out. The video above of a young woman in Tahrir Square was shot today, where 250,000 gathered in anticipation of tomorrow's Million March and general strike.

And Google has added this new speak-to-tweet service today. A young woman in Cairo left this message.

"I just wanted to let the world know that we have been disconnected from our last point of communications from the internet. And there is strong word going around that we will again be disconnected from mobile phone calls.

Um, so I wanted to let everyone know in case you don't get any feedback from what's happening tomorrow, and I didn't want anyone to worry about us.

They did this before; the only difference is the last time they did this, I was completely freaked out. I was too scared that they are going to shoot us all and nobody would know about it.

This time, I'm not scared at all. I feel as if, like, I want to ask them 'bring it on!' We are excited. We are happy. We are going to be in Tahrir Square tomorrow. We are going to be huge and we are going to do our march and do our protest and Mubarak is going out. Be with us. Bye bye."

(via KPSP) Google announced the product in its blog on Monday, saying they are just trying to help the "people on the ground."

"We hope that this will go some way to helping people in Egypt stay connected at this very difficult time," the blog stated. "Our thoughts are with everyone there."

The numbers that people can call to get their word out are:

During an interview with George W. Bush which aired on C-SPAN's Q&A discussing his book Decision Points at the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, the former president was asked if he was "concerned that legislation that you passed such as the Patriot Act opens the door for potential abuse by future presidencies?". Never mind the abuses during his presidency that failed soundly.

He followed it up by saying that he was glad the Congress decided to pass The Patriot Act and renew it again no matter which party was in the majority and defended his administration's spying and torture, or as he called it "enhanced interrogation" that he claimed was necessary to keep us safe from terrorism. He also claimed that The Patriot Act assured that civil liberties were not undermined.

Nothing like some major revisionist history from Bush with no one there to push back during this softball forum from C-SPAN.

CAMERATO: Good morning Mr. President. My name is C.J. Camerato and I’m from Boston Massachusetts and I’m curious, were or are you concerned that legislation that you passed such as the Patriot Act opens the door for potential abuse by future presidencies?

BUSH: Great question. The law that was passed twice by the Congress, once when Republicans controlled the Congress, when we controlled the Congress and once after the ’06 election when we got soundly thumped, guarantee civil liberties and there’s a lot of safeguards in the law. And I don’t think a president can… can, through executive order preempt the safeguards in the Patriot Act. There are plenty of checks and balances in our system and throughout the book and historians will note throughout my presidency that I worked assiduously to make sure that civil liberties were not undermined.
