Bachmann: No One Would Take 10-1 Deal During Debate Because the Cuts Were 'Fake'
Rep. Michele Bachmann was asked by Chris Wallace why all of the Republicans during the debate in Iowa were so completely unwilling to compromise that all of them would not even accept a ten to one deal on deficit cuts to tax increases. Rather than admit that Republicans are now so rigid on their stance of never, ever raising taxes after pledging their allegiance to Grover Norquist and that no sort of compromise will ever be acceptable to them, what was Bachmann's response? They all raised their hands because the cuts in the deal would have been "fake."
WALLACE: Let's go back to that moment in the debate, though, when you -- and I've got to say, all the other candidates on that stage said that you would walk away from a debt deal, here it is right here, $10 in real spending cuts, to $1 in revenue increases. 10-1. Even Reagan's top economic adviser, Marty Feldstein, said that is too hard-line, that that would be walking away from a huge conservative victory.
BACHMANN: Well, I think probably Reagan would be the best example, because Reagan was going to get $3 in spending cuts for every $1 in tax increases. It ended up being $3 in tax increases for every $1 in spending cuts. That's the way it works in D.C. The deal sounds so rosy in the very beginning, and usually the cuts are illusory, they are off into future years. And of course one Congress can't bind the next Congress, and a Congress lasts for two years. So we can't bind what future Congresses can do. We can beat our chests and be really proud and say, oh, we're going to cut trillions of dollars, but we can't guarantee what future Congresses will do. That's why no one would take that deal on the Fox stage of the debate, because we all know that they're fake cuts, essentially. They sound good. They're soundbites, but they are not real.
I am about reality. That's what I care about. This is not a joke. This is not just a political game. This is getting the country back on the right track. People really are suffering, all across this state I have seen it. People want jobs, they want job growth, and they want someone who has the backbone to do it. I do.
I guess by that measure, no one in Congress should ever vote on anything that can be overturned by a future Congress or those votes are meaningless. The truth of the matter is we've got one party that is so inflexible on tax increases that they don't care how many lives it destroys as long as we never raise taxes on their rich campaign contributors.

..this nut wanted to default on the national debt, yet here we have a "serious" Beltway pundit asking this loon serious questions about economics. And then acting like her answers have merit.

I really cannot stand this woman. She is a huge liar; she is a charlatan.
Bachmann's reality is that of homophobia. Bachmann's reality is evil.....she wants to cut an social security and medicare benefits to future recipients, and she wants to do it now, not some time in the future. What the hell gives her the right to steal from those who have already put money into the system year after year? What the hell gives her the right to balance the budget on the backs of the poor, the sick, and the elderly when her old hero George W. Bush gave tax cuts that mainly benefitted the wealthiest and her old hero George W. Bush started 2 wars that were not paid for?
Note that I say "old hero" Bush because the first time I think I ever heard of Bachmann was during Bush's 2007 State of the Union address....Bachmann was all over him, hugging and kissing him, wanting to get his autograph......she didn't want to let go. She was like a teenage girl at a Justin Bieber concert.
I've tried to send emails recently to the contact information on her Presidential web site.....it keeps getting rejected, saying my "quota" has been exceeded. I think I have not been able to send her emails ever since I sent an email asking her about her husband and his hatred of teh gay. I think I am being censored!
That was the most disgusting spectacle. I swear she would have dropped and given him head right there of the floor of the House in front of the whole world.
You mean like that hotdog picture that's been going around? Or maybe that was that stick of fried butter.
It was disgusting, wasn't it?!?!
Every day at 12:15 pm my computer automatically sends an email to megan kelly reminding her that she's a c*nt, and for some reason her reply is always blocked. I wonder; does she know she's being censored?
Humpty Dumpty was pushed.
I just love it when Jon Stewart tears her apart and shows her hypocrisy and lies.
...even something wacky. She'd be a do-nothing president just like she's do-nothing representative.
Mickey: "It was an epiphany. Do you know what an epipany is?"
Keoni: "NOT NOW MICKEY!"
To paraphrase Chevy Chase " bachmann you ignorant slut"
The question was hypothetical...Obviously it's not real.
Much like you candidacy...
bachmann and her whole family rape
the govt for all the govt. welfare they can
get, but want to cut the throats of the elderly,
our brave vets, children and all the poor/middle
class without healthcare, food or homes.
How can she say she loves and respects her wonderful husband, but her campaign has brought him to the attention of the public and what the public sees is a very closeted gay man who uses federal funds in his very questionable business and is the brunt of many jokes, some very bad and vile, yet she continues on with her campaign to be president. Imagine Dr. Dainty has the 'first dud' in the White House.
This is the argument they are going to make to push the balanced budget amendment to the Constitution. The idea that one sitting Congress should be able to bind the next to tax cuts.
They didn't think they needed to be bound by paygo, nor did they seem tho think they were bound to pay the bills that they racked up.
Guess Wallace could not say "You know the question was hypothetical.......you dumb bitch?"
Not to worry. I'm sure he calls women derogatory names behind their back the same way you do.
Watch out - you're leaking Rep. Bachmann's legislative strategery... ;)
Although I do agree with her on one point - the GOP should never again be allowed to submit any budget that assumes tax cuts "sunset" to goose the CBO scoring, given that we know that's utter nonsense.
bAchmann is the wack-a-mole side show of her closeted husbands pray-a-way...
Bachman is right about, the “deal”, often it’s not what is said, to get the ”deal”, but she is dead wrong on how to change course. Bachman is just like the conservatives in this respect, she wants to change course, so drastically, it would harm the nation as a whole and 95% of it’s people, unemployment would drive straight down, States would be forced into bankruptcy and business would close and the only ones who would survive this calamity would be the rich and wealthy, of which typical republicans and Conservatives, do not care, what happens to them, it’s winnowing of the weak to her ilk, pushed to side of the road of the Nation to die and all supports and safety Nets would be dead along with the raising population.
Bachman, is a shill for the greedy, nothing more, nothing less.
We would be a first world, third world nation in no time flat, all regulation and market protections would be done away with. Roads, Water, Farming, Food supply, Unions and the middle class would dry up and die, we’d be left with swaggering class of Aristocratic, Plutocrats, filled with Oligarchic Princes and kings of industry. Company Towns, Stores and Housing would be all that’s left, oh and the poor farm, if they’ll have your sorry, broke down butts, no Pensions, no 401k’s, no IRS’s and no Savings at least, no for now laboring peasant class, we’d all be surf’s, subjects.
No Bachman is clear, she’d rather have a crash, so only the rich and wealthy, they’d be just like Carpet baggers, swarming over the spoils.
And Bachman would be telling everyone, they’d better start praying, but not for them to do the right thing, that ship will have sailed.
A Government cannot be run like a family, because it is dysfunctional, with all the diverse, people and Cultural, Religious diversity and that what makes up the unique melting pot, we call America, a Republic that uses Democratic principles. Our Constitution is a secular document, that has some religious doctrine, but secular it is, it’s freedom of religion and freedom… from religion, that’s the bedrock and all who want to, force any religion on others through Government, are tyrannous usurpers of the highest order.
In a down, struggling economy, you cannot, cut revenues to the economy, in the front end, it would prolong the recession and turn it deeper into depression, that’s Economics 101, when the private class, refuses to invest, the last resort is the Government and Bachman and her ilk, hate Government… Never, ever elect someone to RUN your Government, who HATES GOVERNMENT… or listen to their HATRED, dressed up as concern, they’re concerned only for their bottem line, there POCKETS..

is starting to resemble Russia, only with a less picturesque capital and slightly better roads. Ironic, isn't it?
as to why people get so outraged by cuts to cherished programs that probably won't ever take place.

you did. Or are you buying into the Republican theme that it is evil socialized medicine?

Hi, I'm Maladaptive Minnesotan, Michele Bachmann. Wanna know what I'm all about? Reality!
Yes, I'm about reality. That's why I won't complete census data, for you see, "If we look at American history, between 1942 and 1947, the data that was collected by the Census Bureau was handed over to the FBI and other organizations at the request of President Roosevelt, and that's how the Japanese were rounded up and put into the internment camps."
Indeed, I'm about reality. That's why I don't want you to support this president. He is "turning our country into a nation of slaves," and his head of Medicare makes "Jack Kevorkian look like Mary Poppins."
And if the media wants to discover reality, it should "take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out are they are pro-America or anti-America."
Reality also means taking coincidence into account. After all, "it was back in the 1970s that the swine flu broke out under another, then under another Democrat president, Jimmy Carter. I'm not blaming this on President Obama, I just think it's an interesting coincidence."
And let's talk reality in the Middle East. Iran is taking over Iraq. "And half of Iraq, the western, northern portion of Iraq, is going to be called…. the Iraq State of Islam, something like that. And I’m sorry, I don’t have the official name, but it’s meant to be the training ground for the terrorists. There’s already an agreement made."
Reality also means taking into account scientific evidence. "Carbon dioxide is portrayed as harmful, but there isn't even one study that can be produced that shows that carbon dioxide is a harmful gas." Seriously, let's get back to reality.
And in reality, "our K-12 public school system, of which ninety per cent of all youth are in the public school system, they will be required to learn that homosexuality is normal, equal and perhaps you should try it. And that will occur immediately, that all schools will begin teaching homosexuality." This is reality.
Wanna know reality about the minimum wage? Here it is: "If we took away the minimum wage — if conceivably it was gone — we could potentially virtually wipe out unemployment completely."
And let's get real about the founding fathers, okay? One of them was John Quincy Adams. That's just reality.
I'm all about reality. Me. The Maladaptive Minnesotan.
Can I have my finger on the nuclear button please?
Everyone is equally entitled to the pursuit of happiness. Wasn't that once self evident?
If you purchase Republican politicians for enough money, they absolutely stay bought.
It's almost admirable in its own twisted way, like honor among thieves or omerta for the Mafia.
Like Jimmy Carter did. Naw, I didn't think so either.
"We will find fulfillment not in the goods that we have, but in the good we can do for each other."

Iowa just flunked its IQ test!
Ed-words
I'm not so sure 'reality' is what you think it is....
It ended up being $3 in tax increases for every $1 in spending cuts.
So at least Bachmann is prepared to say that St. Ronald of Alzheimer's raised taxes instead of cutting them. Good for her. (Actually I doubt very much that she thought ahead as to the implications of the numbers she made up on the spur of the moment.)
It will be a sad sad day
...did she mention anything that sounds like a plan or was she just flapping her yap? I'm still waiting for something that sounds like a plan; making Obama a one-termer is not a plan for job-growth. Telling me its obama's fault or the dems fault or the sun came up in the east this morning is not a plan for job-growth. When do we hear about their PLAN for Job-Growth? They've been promising Jobs Jobs Jobs and I don't think America thinks that killing jobs and prolonged unemployment is what they were talking about. Of course they didn't know what they were talking about because they talk about jobs but they're only interested in one: the presidents and that's not helping people...
Mickey: "It was an epiphany. Do you know what an epipany is?"
Keoni: "NOT NOW MICKEY!"
To Grover Norquists, and to the tax cuts for which he stands.
One party, in perpituity evoking God at every turn.
With liberty and justice to only those who can afford them.
And they dare question the "Patriotism" of any who disagree.
Freedom Isn't Free, So Stop Whining And Pay Your Taxes.
She is vacuous. She has no real position other than whatever position that will get her power. The scary thing is that she is cozy with Christian Dominionists. Do a google search or a youtube search for Bachmann and Coral Ridge Ministries. She and her husband have attained their wealth using evangelicals that want to bring theocracy to America. She now believes this will bring her the power she seeks. She really has no understanding of America and how it works (see her discussion on the census which is in the Constitution and her discussion of unAmerican Congressmen). As a politician, you should be known by the company that you keep. She has shot video with the most outrageous and theocratic elements of our society. Now the theocrats have join with the Grover Norquist crowd to make tax cuts for "job creators" biblical. Grover wanted to shrink government to the size that you could drowned it in a bath tub. Look around: we are there. We refuse to pay for police, fire, teachers, roads, bridges and people that cannot work. In 2011, we are no poorer than we were in 1965. We just have wealth concentrated in the very rich and the rich will not be separated from their money because of the help of the theocrats. If she were to win, I would leave this country.
